I have taken the third class out of the Babies’ room and placed it with the second class in the principal room. The first class is now in the second class room. I did this because of the large number of children in the third and fourth classes. This being often over 90 including both classes.

The following is a copy
“The inconvenient and often overcrowded rooms and the insufficiency and general inefficiency of the teaching staff render the task of conducting this school very difficult and good organisation is nearly impossible. The Infants are much too talkative and inattentive, and until habits of ready obedience prevail, no real progress can be made. The classes are large and require efficient teachers who take a keen interest in their work. The medium grant under Article 98(b) of the Code has been leniently recommended; but great improvement will be expected next year in all classes.”

Received the Government Report today. The following is a copy;-
Infants School
The character of the teaching is seberely mechanical and the listlesness and inattention of the children indicate thjat more interesting and brighter methods are desirable. The habit of answering in complete sentences should be encouraged and a vigorous effort made to interest the children in their work. The medium grant under Article 98(b) of the Code has again been leniently recommended. Care must be taken not to overcrowd the classroom and the requirements of article 73 must not be ignored. More reading books are required.
E A Swann and E Ginns are recognised under Article 68. Miss Glover will receive her certificate in due course.

I, H E Vann, took temporary charge of this school. I find the children extremely listless and inattentive, very talkative and apparently taking little interest in their work.
The order of children in going in and out of school is bad, and they do not march to the music.
Several children came too late to receive their marks this afternoon.
Find the 1st class know very little Arithmetic, very few being able to put down such numbers as 21 and 10.
The Rev W R Morse, G T Mason Esq and J Claridge Esq visited and inspected the buildings.
G T Mason Esq and Mr Preston visited I informed them that glass panels were required in two doors for the better organisation of this school. During this week I have endeavoured to re-organise this school. Finding the Babies’ room too crowded I have removed the 3rd class from thence and put them with the 2nd in the top room; the 1st class I have moved from the latter into the 1st room. This will probably require a re-arrangement of the present timetable. Arithmetic of 1st calss is still very bad.

Visited the school and tested the registers which were correct.
W R Morse

Punished Harold darnell for truant playing.
Again punished harold Darnell for truant playing whom I find to be a confirmed truant.
Harold Darnell again playing truant.
I find the re-arrangement of classes answers very well.
Children march to music a little better though it is still far from good.
I find it extremely difficult to make the children give their whole attention when a lesson is being given. It will need time and patience as well as continual watching on the part of the Mistress to irradicate the listlessness and inattention which have been allowed amongst the children. The younger teachers also need rousing. The Arithmetic of the 1st class I slightly improved, thjough very poor still.
Last week and this I have been giving out from dictation numbers up to 28and have commenced teaching addition to 1st class who have also been taught to write their own names.
Commenced to use the bells at drill which I find have not been used lately.
I have found several cases of truant-playing amongst the 1st and 2nd class boys. I also find that the attendance of children between 3 and 5yrs of age is very irregular. Made out litst of these children and sent the teachers of 3rd and 4th classes round to their parents to inform them that unless these children come more regularly they will not be allowed to remain.
Re-arranged the 1st class putting a few of these 2nd division into the 1st and a few out of the 1st into the 2nd. The 1st divison are progressing with the addition of numbers below 20. Most of them now know how to write their own names, though they do not form their letters properly and many write down their figures backwards.
Average attendance for week 137.

School not held in the usual premisesmthis week as they are being whitewashed and painted. Took the children down to the old Infants School rectory Road which we shall use temporarily. No. present 110.
Find the 2nd divison of 1st class very backward so took them myself putting the 1st div who now seem to be progressing under the charge of Violet chapman.
The 2nd division greatly need attention many children being here who came to school late, have not been in the lower part of the school and consequently have not been well grounded. This division should receive special attention by Head Mistress.
Rev W R Morse called.
Have insisted upon the Pupil teachers going into the playground and playing with their respective classes whilst I have been taking charge of the school. This plan should be followed up.
Several children are absent this week through scarlet fever.
The assistant and pupil teachers are not sufficiently energetic. The listlessness and inattention of children will never be conquered until the teachers rouse themselves to greater energy and activity.

Have endeavoured to encourage harold darnell to come to school instead of punishing him, the rsult being that he has come every time since I spoke to him.

The school moved to its usual premises at the end of this morning’s work. Only two rooms were ready for use. Have been taking the 2nd division of the 1st class myself. They are very backward in reading some of them not knowing words of two letters. They are also very listles and inattentive.
I have put the 3rd class in the top room with the 2nd class and the babies have a room for themselves. The 1st class I have put in the 1st room. I think this arrangement of the classes will answer very well; but it prevents us working quite according to the present timetable. As the lobby is not finished the children have to bring their clothes into school. The walls are not dry enough to put the pictures up, and while the workmen are doing the yard the children cannot go out to play, but in the mornings I let each class go out separately in charge of its teacher, in recreation time.
Rev W R Morse visited the school.
The2nd division of the 1st class have made a little progress in their reading reading but they are still very backward. The 2nd class are very fidgety and inattentive and I think this is chiefly owing to the teacher who fails to make the lesons attractive.
Harold Darnell and James Whitmee were punished for playing truant this morning.

The attendance was only 98 this afternoon owing to the rain.

I have examined all the classes this week and I find the children brighter and more attentive to their work than they were. Reading and writing are progressing very well. Arithmetic is improving but is still the weakest subject and requires great attention in each class. Owing to the very badd attendance before Christmas there are a number of backward children in each class but with special attention and careful teaching I hope they will soon make up for lost time.
The average for the week is 110.8. Number on registers 187.

On arriving at school this morning I found all the pictures in the first room had been taken down by workmen on Saturday and put in a very untidy heap in order to recolour the walls because the first colour put on by them was peeling of and looking very unsightly. I was surprised to find the room in such disorder because I had been given to understand that it was to be done during the Easter vacation. The walls are still wet and unfinished and the floor and desks spotted with paint. The Rev W R Morse expressed his surprise that the workmen had started now.

Kate Fountain is still away from school. Her illness has developed seriously, being an ulcerated stomach and a broken blood vessel, so it will probably be several weeks before she is able to resume duties. At present Violet Chapman is taking her clas and I am taking all the first class myself. This seems to be the only arrangement possible under the circumstances.

Three ladders and some pails of colour-wash were left in the lobby by the workmen, and some children while reaching for their hats this afternoon accidentally touched one of the ladders causing it to fall over; one little boy, James Britchford 3 years of age, was knocked down and on picking him up I found he could not walk. I thought his leg was sprained so sent for his mother to fetch him. She came and took him from here to Dr Baker who, on examining the child, found his thigh broken and told the mother to take him to the Infirmary at northampton, which she did the same evening.
It was a pure accident, as I was close by at the time and saw it all happen. The ladders have now been removed.

Opened school this morning after the holiday given for the show.
The workmen have been in to do the ceilings of two of the rooms, and the desks and gallery were all splashed with white-wash and quite unfit for the children to sit on. The teachers rubbed these off with dusters. The floors too are very splashed and dirty; but as the ceilings are evidently not finished it is useless to have the floors scrubbed before they are.
I shall be very glad when the workmen have quite finished so that the pictures can be put up again and everything mad clean and tidy.
Kate Fountain has commenced duties this morning after being away since 9th May through illness.
Mr G Mason called this afternoon and brought the Report.
I showed him the rooma and pointed out the unsatisfactory and dilatory way in which the workmen were doing their work. He remarked that it was quite time they were finished and that he would see into it.
Kate Fountain has not been at school today.
The following is a copy of the Government Report:-
Infants School
“There has been a change of Head Teacher during the year and, although some restlessness still prevails, the children are more attentive and the discipline has improved. There is also reasonable hope that the instruction will show commensurate progress in the future, for at present the medium grant under Article 98 (b) of the Code can only be recommended with hesitation. Care should be taken in both departments of the school to satisfy Article 73 (see small print). The interior of this Infants’ roomhas been greatly improved by the recent renovation.”
Kate Fountain has obtained a Second Class in the Queen’s Scholarship Examination.

I have examined all the classes this week. Writing and Arithmetic seem to be progressing very well but Reading requires attention in all the classes. The discipline in the Babies’room is very good but must improve in the 2nd and 3rd classes, this is partly accounted for by the teacher of the 2nd class having been away for 6 weeks theough illness, and she does not seem at all strong now.

Owing to the very bad attendance for the last few weeks. I shall postpone the usual quarterly exam (which should be held this week) for a fortnight.

Commenced the quarterly examination today.
I have examined alll the classes and find that the 2nd class is the most backward. Reading and Arithmetic are both unsatisfactory in this class, and the discipline is not good. The teacher does not seem sufficiently energetic and interesting and has allowed the children to get into the bad habit of guessing the answers. In future I shall try to arrange to take this class in these subjects myself two oe three times during each week of the coming quarter. The other classes are progressing very well although there are a few backward children in each - those who have been away for several weeks through measles. There is a tendency to answer in single words instead of in sentences and tables require attention in all the classes.
A half holiday was given this afternoon because there was a circus in the town.
A very snowy morning and only a few children here so did not mark the registers.

I have held the usual quarterly examination this week. I find that the 2nd class has improved since the last quarterly examination, they do not guess at their answers so much, although there is still a tendency to do so, and the discipline is better. The Reading and Arithmetic in this class still require attention and careful teaching. All the other classes are progressing favourably the Babies’ class being very bright and interested in their work. Kindergarten, Drill and Singing are very satisfactory throughout. T^ables and Spelling should have special attention, and answering in complete sentences enforced.

Infants School
“The children are not at all punctual in coming to school, they attend very irregularly, and when in school are much too listless and inattentive. The teachers seem earnest and painstaking, but the work is little above fair in any class, and a considerable improvement might be shown in all the work.
The lessons are too long and too little varied, and the teaching is wanting in brightness. The Babies’ class is under the best control. T square rulers are needed. Apex ventilation is required in the two large rooms and inlets for fresh air in all the rooms.
The cloakroom floor should be boarded and made level, there are not sufficient hat-pegs, and one row is too high. The cloakroom should be properly ventilated. There are only six closets for the girls and infants, this is insufficient; separate offices should be provided for the infants and a proper urinal is also needed.

Ralph maddams and his sister came to school too late to be marked present, and many children came after nine, on enquiring the reason I find that most of them are late because their mothers do not get them ready in time, so am sending notes to ask them to get them ready earlier so that they can get here by nine o’clock.

I have held the quarterly examination this week. The work seems to be progressing fairly well Reading and Arithmetic are the weakest subjects and I have advised the teacher to give special attention to these and to make the lessons as interesting and bright as possible with plenty of variety in the treatment of the subjects. The second class is the least satisfactory as regards both attainments and discipline the teacher of this class does not seem earnest or energetic enough in her work and is unable to command attention for long. The Babies’ room is in good order and the children seem happy and interestd in their work.

She was so backward in all subjects, and did not know the most elementary Geography, Grammar and History. She could not spell correctly and composition was quite beyond her.
I have been conducting the usual quarterlt examination during the past week. Owing to the small staff I have had for the last six weeks, the work is not as good as it should be. With an adequate staff I hope for improvement during the coming quarter.
