Very good attendance in the 3rd and 4th classes.

07 Mar

Time table not strictly followed.

Gave an object lesson on Coins to 1st class instead of the Reading lesson.  The 2nd class had the same lesson instead of spellings.  I thought this desirable as all the necessary objects were obtained.  Therefore there will be a slight deviation in the lessons tomorrow.

07 Mar

F Tassell does not seem to improve either in lessons or in conducting her class.  She makes the same mistakes after repeated corrections, and I have had to give her the same Geography to learn for four successive lessons and now she does not know it therefore I think it a complete waste of time for her to go on with teaching.

09 Mar

Miss Farey informed me today that F Tassell managed 4th class very indifferently.  Therefore saw F Tassell give a Reading lesson.  No energy or life displayed and children just repeated the alphabet in a mechanical manner.

13 Mar

Visited the school, tested registers – correct.

Agree with Miss Ward to cease instructing F Tassell who appears to have no memory to retain what she is taught.

Copy of the Report on the Government Examination 1892

“The school buildings have been put into a good state and are much improved in every way.  The school is well conducted and very creditably taught, especially in the upper part of the school and intelligence was shown in the object lessons.  Reading is a little too slow and Handwriting needs attention.  The two lower classes are fairly taught.  Backs should be placed to the gallery seats in the classroom.”

Drafted a number of children from 3rd class into 2nd class and several of the latter into 1st class.  This movement was made in consequence of the large number in the Babies’ room.

The oral lessons are being given in 2nd class instead of three and thus extra time is devoted to Arithnetic and Reading which are at present very poor.

11 Oct

Third and fourth classes now take very elementary drawing instead of fraying on Wednesday afternoon.  First class girls have begun a new occupation called rosette making.  They like it exceedingly and are progressing well with it.

Rev C J Gordon visited the school and brought this year’s report.  The following is a copy:-

“There have been several changes in the staff during the year but the children are well behaved and the school promises to do well under the present Mistress.  Handwriting is greatly improving in the first class but Reading and Number will need attention throughout the school.  The children sing nicely and drill weel and seem much interested in their Kindergarten work.  The desks for the second class are too high.  The last report should be entered in the Log-book.  Better ventilation is needed in each room.  The cloakroom is very old and affords insufficient accommodation.  Backs should be placed to the gallery seats in the Babies’ room; forms with backs on also needed.”

“The illness of the children during the early part of the year and of the teacher at the end has somewhat interfered with the working of the school.  The children are well behaved, though a little restless, and have passed a creditable examination.  Handwriting might be more even and more Word-building is necessary in reading.  The teaching of the Babies leaves much to be desired.  The Babies room will accommodate 50, and there are often 70 children in this room which is very close and as was pointed out last year prpoer apex ventilation is needed.”
