Part 3 1889 - 1892

1889

01 Jan

Yesterday school was re-opened with only 155 present.

I admitted one boy.  The teachers went for absentees.

02 Jan

Many children still away.

The PT Lessons will commence next week.

Miss Lucas will begin her Assistantship next week, some misunderstanding having arisen respecting the date of the re-opening of the school.

04 Jan

Class 1 say some of their verses and hymns very well.  They do not answer on their Scripture lessons as well, as I thought they would do.

Kate Lewis left school today, a monitress being no longer required.

07 Jan

Today Miss Lucas commenced her work here as Assistant Mistress.  Her class seemed rather tired and were rather noisy during the day; of course they were testing the new teacher.  I left her to assert herself in her own way.

09 Jan

Knitting is again giving trouble in all the classes.

Several children in the upper and most children in the lower classes are absent through the unfavourable weather.  The roads are so exceedingly muddy that it is impossible to send for the absentees.

11 Jan

The average attendance this week is low.

I examined the first class in Reading and found a marked improvement.

Scripture is advancing fairly well in all classes.

14 Jan

With the fine weather a few children have returned to school.

All settled down to work this morning.

Miss Lucas has the Second class, M Packwood has the Third, while M Faulkner teaches the Babies.

Class 1 under the care of Mistress are progressing steadily.

16 Jan

Knitting was done a little better today in all classes.  The teachers are all working earnestly and thoroughly.

17 Jan

The Pupil Teachers are now busy recapitulating their lessons.  Class 2 are toning down and seem interested in their work.  The First class are delighted with a  Kindergarten song and Movement play which they are learning.

18 Jan

Miss Lucas was present today when I examined the Second class.  A slight improvement was the result of her fortnight’s work.

21 Jan

Today the attendance was higher in consequence of the weather being favourable.

Scripture is being recapitulated carefully in all classes.  The Diocesan Examination is now very close at hand.

23 Jan

Knitting is decidedly improved in class 1.

All those who are inattentive and careless have to be kept in at night in order to accomplish their full amount of work.

25 Jan

Notice of the Diocesan Inspection was received today.  I read out the notice and explained it, subsequently nailing it to the wall.

28 Jan

I re-admitted one girl.

On Thursday Miss Lucas’s class is to be examined, so she was informed today to that effect in order that all may be in readiness for an individual inspection.

30 Jan

There is much difficulty with the children in every group over gaining ready answers.  Class 1 need special vigour to be combined with the Scripture lessons.  Some of Group 1 answer very carefully.

31 Jan

Miss Lucas took class 1 this morning while her class was examined by me.  A decided improvement is manifest in class 2.  Miss Lucas has worked earnestly and energetically with them.

01 Feb

Needlework in both class 1 and 2 is making decided progress but there are many still, especially in the Second class, who will need much individual attention before their sewing is good.

04 Feb

The school was visited this morning by Mr Butcher who tested the registers and found them correct.

The attendance is very low especially in the two lower classes, the snow not yet having disappeared.

14 Feb

This afternoon the usual Friday Holiday was announced, tomorrow being the Friday following the Diocesan Examination.

Average attendance ...

18 Feb

Miss Lucas did not reach school till a quarter to 11 this morning.  She was exceedingly rude and made no apology for coming to her duties at so unreasonable a time.  This too occurred after her leave of absence was refused, the Head Mistress having given up an extra week to Miss Lucas at Christmas, considered that she ought to be at her duties at the proper time.

20 Feb

As the weather is a little warmer the children are attending better this week.  Classes 3 and 4 make very slow progress ... ...

21 Feb

Class 2 are learning a new song and class 1 be ...to play the game of “The Water Wheel” very well.

22 Feb

Class 1 began sewing their handkerchiefs for the examination.  Some good sewing was done by the Upper Division.

25 Feb

Stormy weather lowered our attendance to 153 in the morning, but 171 were present this afternoon.

Work began well and the children were attentive and orderly.

27 Feb

Class 1 both knit and sew moderately well now.

I examined class 2 and found them rather backward in Reading and Sewing.

28 Feb

Got some new needles for Needle Drill.

01 Mar

A great improvement marked the general character of work in class 1 on examination today.

Almost every child has been put in a different place to work up for another examination next Friday.

Class 2 Needlework was examined this afternoon, results fair.

Average for the week ...

Not so many present this morning owing to the weather being so keen and frosty.

Many children are away in the Lower Division of class 1.

May Packwood is studying Scripture this week as her examination will take place on Saturday.

08 Mar

Only 101 present this morning, the weather being very snowy and wet.

There were 200 marked today.

M Faulkner took class 4 very skilfully for their work.  Her own studies do not progress so satisfactorily, for she is insufficiently exact.

10 Apr

The attendance keeps up this week, and some good work has been done in all classes since Monday.  Class 1 had an examination in Knitting.  The majority passed well.

12 Apr

Classes 1 and 2 passed very creditably in needlework.

Average attendance 202.  Several babies admitted this week.

12 Apr

Mr and Mrs with Mr H Rowntree visited on Thursday and were pleased with the singing.

May Packwood will be examined in the 3rd year at the PT’s examination on Saturday.

15 Apr

A fine morning and a good attendance.

Recapitulated several of Class 1 object lessons.  From the list of object lessons several have had to be removed owing to so many children having been away during the winter.

17 Apr

Class 2 were examined in their object lessons this morning but they did not answer very readily.  A greater number completed their knitting today than there did last week.

18 Apr

Today we break up till Easter Tuesday.  There has been a slight depression in the attendance this week owing to the approach of Easter.

22 Apr

Recommenced work with 161 children, but 184 came this afternoon.

Class 1 sewed and sang very well.

25 Apr

I examined class 2 in needlework and found it improving very steadily.

26 Apr

Class 1 continued learning a new Recitation.  Several of class 3 can sew very well now.

29 Apr

I was obliged to remove several of the object lessons from the list a little while ago, ... they were only prepared by a few of the children, when so many were absent from class 1 in the winter.

01 May

New registers were used in all classes as this is the first day of the school year.

20 Jun

During the week I have admitted 14 scholars, and 2 have been re-admitted.

Average 174 for the week.

... Jun

A great number in class 1 cannot knit yet and class 3 are very slowly learning Sewing.

28 Jun

Two scholars were admitted this week.  Nearly all the first class can keep their places during a Reading lesson.  Monday, this being the date fixed for the Temperance excursion, I told the children that there was to be a holiday on that day.

Managers have arranged for Miss Lucas to teach in the Mixed Department for a time.  I told her of ... today.

25 Jul

The Report on the Government Examination was received this morning.  It is as follows:-

Infants School No. 1 – “The first class does very well.  In the lower classes the hand writing and Needlework should be more regular.  Singing and order are excellent.”

E M Packwood has passed fairly (Geography* and Needlework*).  Martha Faulkner can be engaged as a PT.  Shilling grants for Music and Needlework.  Good Merit grant awarded.  £121.5 Grant.  A E Lucas is recognised under Article 50.

                                                                                                                Geo S Mason

21 Jul

Mr Vann and Mr Stevens and a clergyman visited today.

Mrs Brampton called to gather particulars respecting her daughter’s probation etc.  We find Kate Brampton too young at present to be a teacher.

02 Sep

Re-opened school after the Harvest vacation.  There were 145 and 153 marked in the morning and afternoon respectively.

9 scholars came for admission this morning but two of them had to be re-admitted.

Miss Lucas returned to her duties as teacher of the 2nd class.

09 Sep

Re-commenced work on Monday with 170 scholars.

A boy and a girl were admitted.

The attendance last week was very low, and I fear that this week gives little promise of any improvement in the numbers.

10 Sep

Miss Lucas is in charge of the school today as I am going to London on business.  The Managers have been acquainted with this matter, and it has their sanction.

12 Sep

A great number of children are absent again this week owing to their being at work still among the corn and potatoes.

10 Sep

In all classes work seems to be done very imperfectly.  The holidays have unsettled the attendance and the prospect of another week is exciting many who are present.

18 Sep

The clergyman who is in charge of this Parish called with his wife this afternoon.

19 Sep

A very wet afternoon and many children are absent.

We broke up at 4 o’clock as a week’s holiday is to be given on account of Rushden Feast.

30 Sep

The school was re-opened this morning and 159 were present.

Measles are very prevalent among the scholars.  One baby girl died at noon today.

01 Oct

More cases of measles keep arising, and the attendance is very low in consequence.  Three children were admitted this week.

02 Oct

I have arranged that lessons on Monday afternoon be taken in lieu of Knitting or Sewing on Wednesdays.

M Faulkner absent with neuralgia on Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday.

04 Oct

The attendance is very low still.

Class 1 are making some advance in Reading.

07 Oct

A great number of children are still away through sickness.  Several families having removed, the little ones have consequently left this school.

09 Oct

Notice an improvement in class 1 Needlework but the 2nd class are still very backward.

11 Oct

A wet day and bad attendance.  Throughout the week the children have been most irregular.  The average for 10 attendances being only ...

... Oct

With the rapid spread of measles there is a decided falling off in attendance.

18 Oct

Work has been conducted as usual this week in spite of the low attendance which is really distressing.

22 Oct

M Packwood was excused her lessons last night because she attended a Teachers Conference, but she was at her work as usual at 7.45a.m. today.

The attendance is now simply as low as possible as a result of sickness and bad weather.

23 Oct

Only 79 children were here yesterday afternoon and this morning.  About 190 should really be in attendance at this time of year, so that no less than 120 are absent.

School closed this afternoon owing to irregularity caused by sickness.

24 Oct

After acquainting one of the school Managers with the state of the attendance, the school was closed for the day, with his consent.

Received a notice from the Correspondent that the log-book would be required at the Managers’ meeting tonight.

School visited by the Rev F Hird and Mr Butcher who tested and signed the registers, finding them correct.

Only 57 were at school this morning.

01 Nov

The attendance has been at the lowest all through the week.

The Rev F Hird called on Wednesday to inform me that the school was not to be closed this week.  No ... have yet returned to school.

05 Nov

Gave a holiday this afternoon as so many children usually stop away on account of the procession which passes through the village on the 5th of November.

08 Nov

The attendance continues very low, the average for the week being only 77.

Examined class 2 yesterday but the results were far from satisfactory.

The progress in classes 3 and 4 is made but slowly.

On Wednesday afternoon we commenced school in the afternoon a ¼ hour earlier and took lessons each ¼ earlier than is stated on the timetable.  This will be continued during the winter.

12 Nov

There is a slight improvement in the attendance today especially in the upper classes.

14 Nov

The Rev F Hird called this morning.

15 Nov

Class 2 examined today, with results “Fair”.

22 Nov

During this week the attendance has improved very slightly.

May Packwood has been away ill since Monday.

Class 2 had their usual examination on Thursday and gave signs of improvement.

Class 1 were examined – they need much careful supervision.

25 Nov

A poor attendance – viz 116 was registered today.

26 Nov

Needlework, Reading and Knitting are becoming more regular with time and practice.  I notice a softening in the tone of the school.

Sent the Log-Book to the Managers’ meeting.

29 Nov

Average attendance 119 only.

02 Dec

A very bad attendance (only 100) is the result of the severity of the weather.

06 Dec

This week I examined the whole school, and find that progress has been made in all classes.

09 Dec

The weather continues very cold and damp, consequently there is no improvement in the attendance.

The PT’s are busy with written work this week preparatory for an examination which they will have on Saturday.

12 Dec

On examining class 2, I find them working steadily.

13 Dec

In class 1 there is a marked improvement this week, in all subjects, but more especially in Reading.

Irregularity characterises the work in class 3 and 4.  This I have explained to the PT’s and shown them how to guard against it.  The general tone in all classes is markedly improved, after this week’s training.

Average 104.

16 Dec

The PT’s had their examination on Saturday, under my supervision.

20 Dec

Broke up for a fortnight’s holiday, Mr Hind and Mr E Barker having called yesterday to inform me respecting the Christmas vacation.

1890

06 Jan

Miss Lucas re-opened this morning for me; 106 were present, one boy was admitted and J Wilson was re-admitted.

The attendance is still bad.

10 Jan

The teachers have been busy recapitulating this week.  Much has been forgotten during the holidays, but the children seem brighter and better for them.

... Jan

The weather is still unfavourable, much sickness is prevalent, and the attendance is not improved.

M Faulkner absent through illness.

20 Jan

M Faulkner returned to school after a week’s absence.

Only 81 were at school this morning.

22 Jan

M Packwood away with influenza.

I notice a great improvement in the discipline and method of the lower classes.

Received notice of Diocesan Examination.

27 Jan

There is no improvement in the attendance.

31 Jan

May Packwood absent for the whole of this week, illness being the cause.

I examined the whole school and found the progress was sure in all classes.

07 Feb

The attendance is merely improved this week by about 12, the average being 116.

Classes 3 and 4 are working well under May Packwood and M Faulkner respectively, while in the upper division of the school progress is rapidly being made.

11 Feb

The Rev F Hird called this morning.

13 Feb

The Diocesan Examination took place today.  The registers were not marked.

14 Feb

A holiday given today.

19 Feb

The Rev F Hirs visited today.

The attendance is a little better this week.

Class 1 has had Reading and Spelling between 9.10 and 9.45, their fluency being imperfect.

25 Feb

Took class 1 for lessons instead of Sewing this afternoon.

28 Feb

The Rev F Hird and Mr G Mason called om us this morning.

I examined the First class today and the results were VF on the whole.

03 Mar

Received the Diocesan report:-

Religious Knowledge      -              Very good

Repetition                      -        Excellent

Discipline and Tone         -            Excellent

School as a whole           -            Excellent

In the upper group the children have a very thorough knowledge of both their Repetition and Scripture subjects, and speak with quite exceptional distinctness and precision.

The lower group also passed a very good examination.

05 Mar

Class 2 examined in Reading, but it fails in fluency.  Their Writing also is irregular.

... Mar

Find a general improvement in all classes, the children being quicker and brighter than they were a week ago.

.. Mar

The Rev F Hird tested the registers and found correct.

Mrs Hird also called today.

Last Saturday, Mar 7th, the PT’s had their Diocesan Examination.  Tomorrow they will have a preparatory examination for their secular inspection.

25 Mar

A very wet day and bad attendance.  Great efforts made in all classes with the backward children.

27 Mar

In examining the 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes this week, I find them, on the whole, to be brighter and more intelligent than they were a week since.

28 mar

A slight improvement marks the attendance.

Great difficulty is found in cultivating those who have returned after a long absence.

03 Apr

Mr Geo S Mason visited this morning.

Broke up today for good Friday and Easter week.

14 Apr

School re-opened and attendance poor.  Three children admitted.

15 Apr

M Faulkner absent with sick headache in the morning.

Class 3 very stupid with their Needlework.

23 Apr

M Faulkner absent through illness.

24 Apr

This morning M Faulkner was at school but she did not return in the afternoon.

25 Apr

M Faulkner not at school for the whole week.

A girl from the upper department came to assist.

28 Apr

In the absence of Miss Faulkner a monitor took class 4.

29 Apr

Gave class 1 an examination in Needlework this morning, so they will have Reading in its stead this afternoon and not the usual sewing lesson.

29 Apr

The Rev F Hird tested the registers and found them correct.

... Apr

M Faulkner came to school this afternoon.

The school year ends today.

Average attendance 134.

01 May

Commenced the new registers this morning this being the first day of the school year.

02 May

The Rev F Hird visited the school.

M Faulkner not been once to her lessons this week.

Form 9 is now being filled.

The Government Examination is to take place on Tuesday May 13th @ 9a.m.

04 May

Gave an examination in Sewing and KG this morning.  ... to be taken this afternoon.

Needlework done fairly well in ... 2.

05 May

Yesterday Mr Varnon, HMI, called here and inspected the school accommodation.  He remarked upon the bad construction and disagreeable situation of the classroom used by class 2 and remarked on our need of a large room for assembly, our temporary porch and the absence of an entrance to the classroom, directly from the playground.

The Rev F Hird and G Mason called this morning.

Reading, Oral and Needlework taken between 9 and 10 today in the three upper classes respectively.

13 May

The Government Inspection took place today, present 171.  The school was not kept till 12 at noon.  We shall not re-open this afternoon.

14 May

Drafted class 1 to the upper dept and re-classified here.

15 May

Made out a list of the requisites mentioned by the Inspector during his visit, and find that they will cost nearly £30, not including the price of a new gallery.

I allowed a little longer a playtime today, the weather being so fine and the children all seeming rather tired after working so steadily for the Examination.

The registers being marked a quarter of an hour earlier than usual, I dismissed the school at a quarter to four.  A holiday is arranged for tomorrow; it is usual to give a holiday on the Friday in the examination week.

20 May

The attendance is low this week, many little ones being at home till the Whitsuntide holidays are over.

23 May

Broke up for a week’s holiday.

Several little children and Babies were admitted during the week.

02 Jun

There were 111 at school this morning, so I made enquiries after absentees.  Several children have recently removed from this village so I have taken their names off the registers.

Four scholars were admitted.

During this week I intend to give up every afternoon to the teaching of Knitting or Needlework.  Classes will be divided and those who do not sew or knit will write until the teacher can give them their necessary individual instruction in Needlework.  Next week work as per timetable will be carried on.

Arrangements were made today for the changing of lessons to be accompanied by marching to different rooms; this was suggested by the Inspector on May 13th.  The ascent and descent of the stairs leading to the schoolroom and classroom B leads to confusion among the 3rd and 4th classes.

03 Jun

M Faulkner did not know her home lessons this morning – this is no uncommon occurrence.  Her sums were worked out of an old Std 6 Arithmetic instead of from the PT’s Arithmetic.  This is a means of shirking the real work.  Her atlas, as usual, and in spite of directions to the contrary, was left at home.

The Rev Smith, Mr G Mason and Mr J Claridge called at school this morning, making inquiries respecting the alterations and books etc, recommended by the Inspector.  The number on registers with the average attendance in each class was notified.
A woman came with a little girl who had been punished for carelessness over knitting.

Three children were admitted.

06 Jun

Transferred the names of several children from the Babies’ register to that of class 4.

09 Jun

Martha Faulkner did not know her lessons this morning.

I admitted three children today.

The attendance is now improving.

11 Jun

Reproved M Faulkner for conducting her class in a careless and idle manner.

Five boys have been re-admitted this week.

The Gilberts who left the school for the Board School just prior to the examinations, on their removal to the Rock Cottages, have returned here since Whitsunweek.

16 Jun

M Faulkner did not know her home lessons again this morning.  In school her work was not done according to repeated previous instructions.

Four children were admitted today and A Barnes came for re-admission.

17 Jun

Martha Faulkner’s home lessons were not learned again last night.  I took her between 7 and 8a.m. instead of between 8 and 9 o’clock and during the summer shall continue to hear her lessons at 7a.m.  She is most unsatisfactory in her studies, and it will be my duty to inform the Managers of the manner in which her work is neglected.

30 Jun

Visit Art 21.

Sent to Mr Vann for the Report, having heard that it arrived a week ago and from him received a copy which is entered below:-

“There has been much sickness during the year for which the condition of the school must be in some measure responsible.  The rooms are damp and badly ventilated.  One classroom which has the smell from a farm-yard at one window and from the offices of a cottage at the other – the cottage obscuring much of the light – ought, I think, to be abandoned.  There is a very unpleasant smell pervading the whole school.  As regards the attainments of the children, they are most creditable under the circumstances, but I hope the Managers will seriously consider my suggestion for building a new Infants’ school altogether and allowing this building to be used as part of the Mixed school.”

E M Packwood has passed fairly but should attend to geography and method.  She is qualified under Art 50 but not under 52.

21 Mar

With a nice bright morning 154 are present.

The Government Examination took place today.  A Cartwright Esq conducted the Inspection.  We dismissed in the afternoon at 3 o’clock.  Registers not marked.

04 May

Work went on today as per timetable.

The Rev C J Gordon and a bevy of ladies called the exercises in Musical Drill.  The visitors were much entertained by the performance of the little ones.

05 May

S Jones went to the upper department at one o’clock today to read and recite for the Head Inspector.  We had great difficulty in getting all our little ones in time for registration this afternoon, as the children of the upper department went in late.  A Cartwright Esq called to hear the object lesson in class 3.  We were disappointed that he could remain so short a time and look forward with pleasure to a visit which he has promised for some future time.

I announced a holiday for tomorrow, all the examinations being completed.

09 May

Class 1 consisting of 72 children were drafted into the upper department.  A re-classification of the school then followed.

11 May

There is no small amount of trouble in preserving the discipline in division 1 owing to the removal of class 1 and the transfer of class 3.  In all classes I am taking a revisal of letters, figures, taking class 1 myself, during this week.

13 May

The Rev W H Boyne-Bunting called on Wednesday, bringing the account book with him.

Seven children have been admitted this week.

Average attendance 137.

16 May

Work as usual commenced at 9a.m.

The discipline and tone of the school require to be carefully regulated.  The second class is the most troublesome.  Miss Farey and Miss Jones are working with it.

Many children do not know their letters and only a few can write easy letters.

18 May

The Rev C J Gordon called.

Several children have been admitted this week.

20 May

Average attendance 141.

23 May

On Monday and Wednesday afternoons class 1 are taking Writing and Knitting, and class 2 are taking Writing instead of Kindergarten.  This will proceed for two weeks, so that a little more time will be given to the teaching of Knitting and Writing and an opportunity afforded for me to procure fresh Kg materials.

There is a great improvement in discipline this week in the upper division.  Class 3 are making very poor headway with writing.

26 May

S Jones did not know her home lessons this morning through having spent the evening with some friends yesterday.

Average for the week 142.

30 May

Miss Farey went home at 9.30 and did not return all day, she being not well.  S Jones took the whole of class 2.

I admitted one girl.

01 Jun

The attendance is lower than it was last week.  A few children are absent through illness, but the majority are staying away because it is now near Whitsuntide and their mothers will send them when the holidays are over.  This irregularity before the school breaks up is a general occurrence.  I am anxious to encourage the attendance at such times, but, so far, my efforts in this direction have proved almost fruitless.

02 Jun

A wet day and only 124 in attendance.

I have considerable trouble with the PT’s home lessons.  Both the written and oral work are only imperfectly executed, this occurs after repeated instructions and notifications on the correct methods of procedure.

03 Jun

S Jones was not at her lessons this morning and complains of being unwell.

We broke up for a week’s holiday, next week being Whitsuntide.

13 Jun

Re-opened the school and only 124 were here.#

I admitted two fresh scholars.

During the morning I will make inquiries for absentees and arrange the children in two groups while two of the teachers call at the homes of those who are not in attendance.

17 Jun

After examining classes 1 and 2, I have now re-arranged and reclassified them, Miss Farey and Miss Jones taking class2 between them.

Several fresh little ones have been admitted during the week.

20 Jun

Two children were admitted.

The attendance suffered both morning and afternoon through the Park Road Chapel Tea and Treat.

21 Jun

I took class 2 this morning but find them very backward.  The movements of all children are very slow and awkward.  Both the teachers and I are endeavouring to cultivate them.

23 Jun

A wet morning and only 89 children here.

24 Jun

Told the children that they were to have their certificates for regularity once a fortnight and that prizes would soon be given to the most regular.  This scheme takes the place of that in which weekly certificates are given.

Average attendance 138.

27 Jun

Admitted two children.

Sent Miss Farey for two irregular scholars.  There were several absentees in the afternoon owing to the Wesleyan Tea taking place today.

30 Jun

Examined class 2 and put two children up in the 1st class and two who know nothing into the 3rd class.  Gave class 1Reading and class 2 Writing instead of an object lesson, in order to help me with my work of reclassification.

S Jones was not at her lessons this morning as she was not well.

01 Jul

I found class 3 making very slow progress when they had an examination today.  I instructed Miss Fisher to encourage her class to be quick in their movements and to secure their attention before giving their lessons.

A holiday was announced for Monday, the day of the Band of Hope Excursion.

The bell will be rung at 9.30 on Tuesday morning so that the children who go to the seaside may not stay away the following morning through rising late.

05 Jul

There were 126 present this morning.  I sent after as many absentees as I possibly could, but it was so showery between 9 and 10a.m. that the teachers could not go far from school.

One child of three was admitted.

The thunder showers were so heavy this afternoon as to reduce our attendance to 117.

07 Jul

Gave class 2 an examination this morning, but many proved very slow.

08 Jul

Class 1 showed signs of marked improvement in their work generally, they are much smarter and quicker in their movements, and more cultivated in their manners and behaviour.

S Jones said her lessons imperfectly twice this week.

11 Jul

There were 137 here today, many being absent on account of a tea being held at the Baptist Chapel.  A holiday was given this afternoon.

S Jones was not at her lessons this morning; she asked to be excused through he being at Northampton yesterday.

14 Jul

Visited the school, tested registers, correct.  153 present.

Weekly average 150.

10 Oct

Have made out a new timetable which I am going to work by this week to test its fitness.

Admitted 2 children.

The Rev C J Gordon visited the school.  I informed him of F Tassell’s backward condition in lessons.  I take her from 5.30 to 6.30 for instruction.  She has a very vague idea of grammar, not even knowing the names of the parts of speech.

I have not taken Kindergarten in 1st and 2nd classes owing to the lack of materials.

14 Oct

Very wet morning – only 117 at school.

Rev W H Boyne-Bunting called.

Average for week – 151.

18 Oct

Received a supply of school materials.

The following Kindergarten is now taught:-

Letter making                                     3rd and 4th classes

Cubes                                                   3rd class

Miss Stamp has charge of 2nd class and Miss Farey with the aid of Florence Tassell takes 3rd and 4th classes.

I find that 1st and 2nd classes are very backward in the three R’s but very good at answering orally.  Consequently in the new timetable I have increased the number of Writing, Reading and Arithmetic lessons and diminished the oral instruction a little.
