Owing to the short days we now commence school in the afternoons at 1.45 instead of 2p.m. and close at 3.45 instead of 4p.m.  Thus taking lessons ¼ of an hour sooner than marked on timetable.

Commenced teaching subtraction as a Gallery lesson this week as most of the children in 1st class have a fair knowledge of Addition.

Most of the 2nd class girls have an idea how to hem but only a few can work well.

                The school is well conducted.  An Assistant teacher (Article 50) should be engaged at once for the Infants School.  (No. 1) or one Pupil Teacher transferred from some other school (Article 83 and 115).

1st class have decidedly improved in Arithmetic on slates during the past month.

Examined the 2nd class in Writing and find they can form nearly all the small letters and figures and that a few can add up one row of figures.

Examined the 3rd class in letters and figures.  Most of them could answer very fairly.

Gave a lesson on “Wool”.

Cautioned the children about coming late to school.

Gave the PT’s an hour to study on Tuesday afternoon while I taught the children a fresh piece of Repetition.

Examined the 1st class in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic and found Mental Arithmetic the weakest subject.

Several of the children have made a paper mat and most of the elder ones can make their letters and common shapes with the peas and sticks.

Two children are absent with whooping cough and two with measles.

Canon Barker visited school today.  He tested the registers and found them marked accurately.

Broke up today for the Easter Holidays.

E Waller gave a lesson to the little ones on a “Box”.

I, LF, gave gallery lessons this week on Subtraction, Shapes and Forms.

Examined the 2nd class.  Most of the children can spell words from a reading card also say figures and count to one hundred.  Mental Arithmetic is poor.  Writing fair.

Gave the 1st class an easy piece of dictation.  Most of the children had spelt the words correctly.

Miss Day gave a lesson on the “Sheep”.

The Babies repeat several short pieces very nicely.

Government examination took place today by L Simpson Esq HMI(A).  Mr Simpson objected to Nelson’s Royal Primer for 2nd class as being too easy, and examined the children from a 1st class reading sheet (No. 12).

W E Currey Esq came into the school but did not do any inspecting.

“The object lessons and other occupations are excellent, and the elementary work in the upper part of the school is very good.  The lower part is not so well taught in elementary work and sewing.  Singing should be more generally taught.

The children in the Upper Division nearly know names of notes and position in the stave.

Quarter ends today, thus finishing the half year.

Examined children throughout school.  Re-arranged them in classes according to the knowledge they had acquired.

There has been a great falling off in the attendance since the holidays through sickness and wet weather.

Scarlet fever is very much on the increase amongst the children, attendance consequently very poor.

Marked registers so we could leave school soon after 11a.m. being a hunting morning the hounds meeting in Rushden.

There seems no fresh cases of fever but measles and mumps have broken out.

There being so many children away I have not kept strictly to the timetable being obliged to make two classes into one.

Examined the 2nd class in Reading and found them much improved.

Miss White commenced duties today as Assistant (Article 50).

Emily Waller absent with face ache.

Miss White has commenced teaching the 2nd class girls to knit, some of them being able to ... very fairly.

Taught the 1st class the names of notes in a song to be sung from note.

Owing to the poor attendance I have given E Waller some time to study during school hours.

Canon Barker visited school this morning and presented miss Day with a small writing case as a token of love and esteem from teachers and children.

Told the children they were to come to school a ¼ of an hour earlier in the afternoon and they would then go ¼ of an hour sooner on account of the short days and many of them having to go some distance.

Owing to altering the time of commencing and closing school I now take all lessons a quarter of an hour earlier than they are marked on the timetable..

12 Dec

Attendance has been rather worse than usual this week, average being only 87 for the week.

Miss White has gone this week to assist in the Mixed school, Miss Day having gone to London to sit for Certificate.

Owing to the great amount of sickness amongst the children, the managers have decided to close school this afternoon for two weeks instead of the usual one.
