NATIONAL SCHOOLS — A public tea and entertainment in aid of the school funds was held in the large schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The gathering was most successful, 150 being present at the tea, and at the concert the room was well filled. The following programme was rendered:—Pianoforte duet, Misses Woodward and F. Carter; song, "Sea dreams," Miss Bonner; song, "The sailor's grave," (encored) Mr. F. Craven; song, "The better land," Miss Woodward; pianoforte duet, "Les Cloches de Corneville," Mrs. Craven and Miss Sartoris; song, "The Lord Chancellor's song," from Iolanthe (encored) Mr. E. H. Underhill; song, "In the chimney corner," Miss E. Bonner; song, "The Goodwin sands," (encored) Rev. F. Hird; song, "The boatswain's story," Mr. E. H. Underhill; song, "Sunshine and rain," (encored) Miss Woodward; pianoforte duet, march from Athalie, Mrs. Craven and Miss Sartoris; song, "When my Jim comes home," (encored) Miss Bonner; song, "The slave chase," (encored) Mr. A. Craven; song, "Misadventures at Margate," Rev. F. Hird; song, "Last night," Miss E. Bonner; song, "The vagabond," Rev. F. Hird.

THE NATIONAL BAND AT PETERBOROUGH—This band gave two concerts in the Drill Hall Peterborough, last Saturday, both concerts being much appreciated. The following were the pieces rendered:— First concert: March, "Palmer House," Pettee; fantasia, "Joan of Arc," H Round; trombone solo, "The death of Nelson," Braham Mr. H. Clayton; selection, "Romeo and Juliet," H. Round; euphonium solo, "There is a green Hill," Gounod, Mr. W. Bird; selection "Great Britain," Round. Second concert: March "Albion," Dodsworth; selection, "II Bravo," Mercadante; cornet solo, "The Lost Chord" Sullivan, Mr. G. Thacker; overture, "Excelsior" Round; waltz, "The Silver Wedding," Embury selection,"Maritana," Wallace; National Anthem.

The National Schools were opened on Monday. Miss L. Hollis and Miss L.B. Hanger have obtained first class certificates in the diocesan examination of pupil teachers in religious knowledge. Miss Hanger, who second in her year, will receive a special prize.

Children of Southend Junior School, who are presenting a short Christmas concert, this afternoon at the Park Road Methodist Church, before an audience of friends and parents, that will include Christmas carols, songs and poems by the pupils of the school and Class two will present a short play entitled “The Lost Fairy.”
