1900 Rushden National School

Oct 01

An Evening Continuation School was opened here tonight – myself, W H Brown and Miss Howard being the teachers present. 39 boys and 30 girls were enrolled and work was proceeded with. Some very good drawings were done by the boys.

Admitted 9 boys and 2 girls.
Science was begun by the boys and afterwards almost all took singing – 8 boys and 1 girl began Shorthand, under Mr Parnell.

Ambulance was begun by the combined classes, and great interest was shown in it.
Average for the week 75.

Mr Goodyear began work tonight as Certificated Assistant.
Sic new scholars admitted.
Owing to the General Election school will not open tomorrow night.

Work is proceeding steadily in all the subjects and the classes have note books for the oral lessons.
The average attendance for the week is 69

The attendance is keeping up well and altho’ some are away ill, and others miss the first lesson on account of overtime, the average is 67.

The attendance among the boys is somewhat smaller tonight on account of firework displays.
The average for the two lessons is 61.

Average for the week 64. The ambulance classes have completed Fractures and their treatment, while in Science – Air – its Comp. & properties, barometer, syringe & siphon & Common pump have been taken.

The attendance still keeps up well – averaging 63. The girls are doing well in both plain & fancy needlework, some of it being very good indeed.

The classes are keeping up well and the average for the week is 64Mr Parker – St John’s Ambulance member attended tonight and gave a practical demonstration to the girls. Every girl was present and great attention was paid. Good progress is being made in all the subjects.

The weather on Tuesday was bad, and the attendance fell. It is again somewhat low owing to many lads working overtime to make up for the time lost through the Queen’s funeral. Average for week 56. Mr Parker and another ambulance man gave a practical exposition to the boys.

Average 60 for the week. The work set out in the syllabuses is now almost completed. Drawing has been a favourite subject with the boys, needlework with the girls.Two ambulance men assisted with the classes again tonight.

The School is ably controlled. Greater proficiency should have been attained by the small classes in Book-keeping and Shorthand. In the other classes, the instruction has been very successfully given.W R Morse

Opened school tonight at 7.15. Miss Fountain and myself present. Enrolled the scholars and arranged Classes.

To suit Convenience of scholars time of Commencing has been altered to 7.30.74 present. Boys had first lessons in Coml Correspondence and Ambulance & began note books. Girls had first lessons in Ambulance and Singing.

Very good attendance tonight – all but one present.Work in proceeding steadily. In the ambulance class, fractures and methods of treatment have been completed. Some very good work has been done in Coml Correspondence books.

The teaching is earnest and methodical. Satisfactory progress has been made during the session, though the exercises in Drawing should have been more varied and the instruction in Domestic Economy might have included practical work. Order is good. The lighting may be improved.W R Morse

Sep 29

Opened school tonight at 7.30. Mr Arnott C and Miss Fountain Art 50 – were present to assist me in the work of enrolling scholars and arranging classes. A large number wished to learn Shorthand.

Time-table slightly altered to allow of those who wished it to take Shorthand instead of the short lesson in Drawing. There will therefore be a lesson in Shorthand from 7.30 to 8 each evening the school meets.
79 (Children) pupils present.
Boys began Coml Correspondence and the Girls – Singing and Ambulance.
Afterwards admitted 5 boys and 1 girl.

Arithc & Shorthand classes commenced work in Ex books.
Geomc design taken with Class 1, freehand with Class 2.

The classes are now in good working order and satisfactory progress is being made.
The attendance continues good – average for the week being 81.

In spite of the sickness of several pupils, the average has been 75 for the past fortnight.
Good progress is being made with the various subjects, and the girls have shown much interest in the experimental work of Dom. Economy.

Nov 04

Mr Millard – St John’s Ambulance Corps. Visited the school tonight and spent and hours with the girls teaching them practical bandaging.
The attendance this week is exceedingly good – 78 last night and 79 tonight.

I have subdivided the Arithc classes, taking one section myself in advance of the others. Tonight they began proportion.
Owing to some acting on the Green, many scholars, Chiefly boys, were away from the 1st lesson. This has reduced the average for the week to 116.

Permission having been received from H M Inspector, the half-hour lesson in Needlework on Tuesday has been discontinued and Vocal Music has taken its place. A very good attendance tonight 124 being present out of 128 on the registers.

Dec 01

I began Simple Interest with the upper class and afterwards gave a lesson on the Heart.

During the week the advanced Class in Arithc have been working sums finding rate % & Time.Tonight we finish half the session, and the average attendance to date is 124.

The following is a Copy of the Government Report.The order is good, and the teaching generally is skilful and painstaking. Drawing appears to have been confined too much to reproduction from flat copies. More attention should be paid in Needlework to Cutting out.
