Newspaper Article:-
Strong attack over condition of school
Scathing criticism of a school was made at Rushden Urban Council’s meeting last night when a resolution calling upon the County Council to improve the South End School playground was carried unanimously.
Mr A H Bailey, mover of the resolution, said he appreciated the efforts made by the school managers and Rushden members of the County Council to get something done at South End, but in the past improvements had never been made without pressure by the Urban Council.
One might expect to find over the school door; “Abandone hope all you who enter here.”
After fifty years they found a totally inadequate playground where children of all ages and both sexes were herded together, and he had seen a child of four close to the railings bordering the highway. A serious accident had already occurred.
OLD SCHOOL
It was an old school, said Mr Bailey, but the County Education Committee had had plenty of time to make improvements.
Also complaining about the playground surface, Mrs Bailey said that children often had to go through pools of water to get to the doors. He blamed the medical as well as the health authorities for failing to get conditions improved.
Mr R R Griffiths, who seconded, said the school managers, of whom he is chairman, had not been silent either on South End or any other school. While respecting and supporting the resolution he felt the playground was but one of the improvements required.
SLUSH AND MUD
There was not only water but slush and mud on the playground.
“Believe you me,” said Mr Griffiths “I have seen horse and cattle having greater privacy in toilet matters than the staff of South End School. There is no ‘Engaged’ or ‘Vacant’. There is a bolt and you look over to see if the place in engaged or empty.
Pointing out that the last discussion about the school in the council chamber was followed by “summit talks” with the chairman of the County Council, the Chief Education Officer and other officials, Mr Griffiths said the school managers felt they had tried and ... ... ... ... should be condemned and pulled down and that the ground behind it should be cleared and a new school built.
£4145 SPENT
Commenting as a county alderman, Mr C G Faulkner said members might be surprised to know that within the last three years £4145 had been spent on South End School alone.
Two years ago Ald. Arthur Allebone and he made representations for a corridor to be made so that classes would not be disturbed and this was on the estimates for the coming year.
There were 291 schools in the county, dozens of which had been handed over as Church of England schools which could not be kept up to standard. Many had earth closets.
The capital expenditure showed over the whole county did not go far and why should not the rural children have as much consideration as the urban children?
DIFFICULTIES
“Most of you” continued Mr Faulkner “know that we have been intending to build a new school. That was thrown out of the development plan and we then proposed to rebuild but that has ...

Once more the end of the school year my ninth at this school. At assembly this morning twenty children received attendance prizes and a host received swimming certificates. Looking back, we have had a fantastically successful year in the scholastic field and the staff is to be congratulated on its diligent work during the past years and their unfailing loyalty and support is everything.
Looking forward, the future does not seem so bright. Alterations to the zoning and children to be admitted will mean a gradual but complete change in the make-up of the school. Classes, schemes of work and timetable will all have to be altered. Teachers will have to be shuffled round; some after years of wonderful service, to classes and age-groups that do not suit them. However, knowing my staff, I know they will give of thjeir best and do everything possible to keep South End a most happy and successful school.

A sudden serious outbreak of measles, German measles with odd cases of chicken pox has seriously affected attendance this past week, particularly in the infant classes.
HT called together the class teachers from the Junior section of the school to discuss and pass on hints from HMI.
1. Individual notes in History, geography and Science to be preferred to class notes whether by teacher or built up by class.
2. English exercises to be based on children’s need rather than text books. Teacher more important and more useful than book.
3. Encourage ‘find out’ attitude in Maths and also use of several methods for some type of sum. “ Same sum done in three different ways probably better than three similar sums all done the same way.”

School was broken into last night. Entrance was obtained by forcing two louvre windows over the door in the corridor. Four teachers’ desks were opened and disarranged. In Mr Mitchell’s room there was evidence of a much more extensive search and his desk had been forced open and about £3 from five different sources stolen. Savings stamps and other contents from the drawers were strewn about in this and another classroom. The caretaker, who discovered all this, reported the matter to the police immediately. Police were present several times during the day pursuing their investigations.
School closes today for half-term holiday.

|
School re-opened today.
On the night of Oct 28th the school again suffered a burglary. Entrance was obtained by breaking a window in my study and then opening the window. My desk was forced and ransacked and about £2 taken. The wireless set was torn from its mounting on the wall and the duplicate keys from my desk taken. These were found by the police in other parts of the school later. Papers and everything else from the desk were strewn all over the room. As no access to the rest of the school was available, a further window was forced and four teachers’ desks were ransacked but nothing of value taken. In their efforts to open Mrs cockle’s desk the thieves damaged it considerably. Escape was made by a window in the girls’ cloakroom. This episode was reported to the police on Mon Oct 29th by a workman who came to the school to carry out repairs.
