Copy of Report Ref: P430/2086/4/1 Dated 16 Aug 1956
|
|
The numbers on roll have increased from 275 to 295 since a report was last issued on this school in 1947. The children are organised in eight classes, one of them a remedial class of 29 children. Children come here at five years of age and two of the classes are made up of infants. Other boys and girls come at the age of seven years from two or three neighbouring Infants Schools. On completing the primary stage of their education here, they are transferred to the Grammar and Technical schools of Wellingborough or to the Secondary Modern schools of Rushden.
The present Headmaster was appointed in September 1950. Changes of staff have added difficulties to his task, but his firm, kindly leadership has ensured good progress. He has given very careful thought to the needs of his school and has planned wisely and well. Of the eight assistants, two are men. All work very conscientiously and they appear to be a cheerful, united team on good terms with the children. Special mention must be made of the long, devoted service of one mistress who is now about to leave after returning from retirement to assist the school.
The premises are taxed to the full by the eight classes and the numbers of children in them. There is no spare room available for activities and the classrooms for the most part give little scope. Physical Education and Music and Movement are conducted in the playground when the weather permits. The Local Education Authority has brought adjoining land in order eventually to extend the present restricted site. Improvements have also been made recently to the outside lavatories. The provision of hot water would add to the cloakroom amenities.
The children make a happy and successful beginning in the infant classes, and good progress is made through the junior school. The special attention given to the slower children in the remedial class is having good results, and as a consequence a number of boys and girls have been able to re-join other classes. The quality of the written English and the sound grasp of Arithmetic processes in the two classes containing the older boys and girls is very creditable. Throughout the school every encouragement is given to the pupils to read wisely, and this has an important influence on the work generally. History and Geography are well taught and the children make a good response to questions; their own recordings might well replace some of their copied notes. Nature Study and simple Science are strong interests, though the organisation of separate classes for boys and girls in Science would appear to be unnecessary. The girls enjoy their sewing and knitting, and the boys are even more engrossed by the challenging range of crafts made available to them. The Art of the school, for the most part shows less vitality. Physical Education though at the mercy of the weather, is carefully organised and the school does well locally in athletics and swimming.
About 55 children stay for the School Meal which is brought in containers from a central kitchen; it is served in two classrooms on desks. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, this is a pleasant social occasion, and is, in its way typical of the happy endeavour of all concerned.
