On reaching school this morning I found that room 6 was full of gas. I opened all windows and the door and gave orders that no one was to go in. Later I tested the gas with a light, turning the gas on and off. I obtained no positive results so phoned the local gas undertaking. A man was sent immediately and he dealt with the trouble. He reported to the HT that we should never get satisfaction with the present installation as the pipes were iron and very old. They are full of corrosion flakes which are constantly falling and affecting both the taps and the efficiency of the lighting. HT requested having such a report in writing and workman stated he would ask the supervisor to let us have one. Apparently the lighting at South End School is a stock subject of conversation and ribaldry among the gass board’s workmen.
