Copy of Report of HMI Mr Firth received 09 Sept 1947

Inspection 23rd and 24th June 1947 Reg No. P.28/192/57

In August 1945 provision was made for the Senior children at Rushden north End Secondary modern School, and this school was re-organised for Juniors and Infants.  Before and since that time the school has passed through a very unsettled period and changes of staff have been distressingly frequent.  During the war years upwards of 40 teachers apart from those attached to evacuated units, were at various times members of staff.  There are now 275 children on roll grouped into two Infant and five Junior classes.  Both Infant teachers have left recently to take up their appointments after serving for comparatively short periods in the school, and temporary measures have had to be adopted to replace them.  It has also been necessary to place two young men, who are candidates for emergency training, in complete charge of two of the lower Junior classes, so that in all, five of the seven classes have had changes of teacher within the last twelve months.

The consequent lack of continuity in some of the teaching has had its effect upon the work of the school, and it is to the credit of the Headmaster and his staff that the results of these disturbances have not been more serious.  The more experienced teachers have made a particularly valuable contribution during the recent anxious times.

Nevertheless, standards have not escaped unscathed, and whilst Reading is satisfactory except for one or two small groups, some weakness in Arithmetic and Written Expression has developed in the lower Junior classes.  The Headmaster is fully aware of this and is prepared to take remedial measures as soon as settled conditions prevail.

The Headmaster has shown considerable appreciation of the needs of his school since the status was changed and in certain directions distinct advances have been made.  In order to make the best use of available teaching resources a measure of specialisation has been introduced for the Junior classes during the afternoon session.  A teacher who had special training in Art, has been made responsible for teaching this subject to all the Junior classes, and an all round improvement has resulted.  The quality of the school singing heard in the top class suggests that not only have the songs been well taught but that the children have become really interested in singing.

Tests in Arithmetic worked by the children in classes I and II produced highly creditable results and when it is considered that each class has a full ability range, the test essays must also be regarded as satisfactory, although each class has a section which finds spelling difficult.  The two teachers concerned are to be congratulated for their sound teaching of the fundamental subjects and for what has been achieved with children whose earlier work has been so much disturbed.

The Physical Training lessons seen during the inspection were well conducted and the collective and group activities were quite good.  The classes were large, however, and activities will continue to be restricted as long as the large air raid shelters, which occupy a central position in both the boys’ and girls’ playgrounds, are allowed to remain.
