Mrs Boyde(C) commenced supply at 10/6 per day again.

I heard from the LEA by telephone that owing to an injury that she (Miss Spindles) is not likely to return to duty this term.

Miss Hounslow(C) LCC teacher borrowed again from class 6 in place of Miss Spindles as agreed by telephone by the Staffing Officer of LEA.

Weather has been bad and heavy snowfalls have brought attendance down to 75% and 73% for the last two weeks.

Miss gellic, Cookery Mistress, wired to say she was unfit for duty.  Our girls had gone to Intermediate School as usual but returned here arriving at 11.30 having been sent back from Intermediate School.

No milk today as farms cannot supply Co-operative Dairy owing to bad road conditions.  Pasteurised milk has been consumed since 3rd Jan 1940 upon instructions from LEA.

Frank Morgan’s salary as caretaker (part time) is increased to £85p.a. as from 1st Aug 1939.

Headmaster has been arranging for evacuees to be housed at Newton Rd School after Easter.  As Secretary of the Head Teachers’ Co-ordinating Committee by instruction received from LEA in order to release Alfred St and South End schools for full time instruction for native scholars after Easter.

Letter from LEA informed me that Miss Spindles is returning to Red Cross duties for the duration of War.

Mrs Ash commenced duty on supply.

School re-opened – all staff present.  Single shift started today.  Evacuees now at Newton Rd School.

George Wills fell and broke his arm in playground, whilst Headmaster was talking to Mr Summerlin the boy fell at our feet.  Dr Lean’s assistant put arm in splints and sent boy to Northampton Hospital.

Headmaster rang up Doctor who on inspection of damage asked for Ambulance.  The boy’s mother was sent for and she accompanied him.  I have reported to LEA.

Headmaster attended the funeral of Mr Austin, late Headmaster of Victoria Council School Wellingborough.  By permission of Managers.

Mr W H Abbott called this afternoon to inspect Air Raid Shelters.  All the children were in them in 1½ mins.

Headmaster left at 9.45 to continue duty at Tennyson Rs School.  Returned at 3.0p.m. and left again at 4.0 for same duties.

16 Sep

Mr A Woodhead, HMI, and Mr T C Millican (Acting Assistant secretary for Education) visited headmaster Secretary of Co-ordinating Committee of Head Teachers prior to a meeting called for 4.0p.m. today to discuss arrangements for educating Colchester children.

Mr Frank Morgan finished duties as Caretaker.

Mr Leonard George Watson commenced duties as Caretaker.

School closed one day for Rushden feast. 

On Sunday the school received about 100 children evacuated from London.  Head teacher as Reception Officer and several of staff acting as billeting officers.

Headmaster left school today at 2.20p.m. to attend a meeting of Head Teachers.

HMI Mr Woodhead and Mr Millican (Assistant Secretary for County Education Committee) to make arrangements for 319 London children received at four centres on Sunday 22 Sept 1940.

Miss Tompkins returned.  Headmaster attended p.m. Alfred St to gather up last Sunday’s evacuated children and allocate them to schools and halls.

Headmaster assisting at Highfield Mission Halls and gathering stock with which to start them from the various Rushden schools.  These last two days, with HMIs’ and LEA’s agreement, HMI Mr A Woodhead made these arrangements.

Miss Chatley (Colchester) released p.m. for billeting work at request of Mr Orvin, Headmaster Colchester.

This morning at about 10.15 bombs were heard dropping.  Headmaster toured all classes and children were found to have automatically placed themselves on the floor under their desks.  Soon afterwards several parents asked for their children but I was able to persuade them that the children were safe and happy and that it would be best to allay panic if they did not withdraw children.  Two parents insisted though about 20 waited or went away.  Five bombs are reported and owing to necessity of detours school closed a little earlier 11.47 to give children longer time to get home.

p.m. – A few late ones and only 196 attended.

Air raid warning lasting several hours caused many children to lose sleep.  A few arrived at 9.0a.m. and only 96 by 10.0a.m. which is the appointed time after a late warning.

Mr J L Halland, Secretary for Education, visited the school to arrange with the Headmaster for a meeting of local Head Teachers and Mr Millican, Assistant Secretary for Education, to discuss plans for the housing for school purposes of Newton Rd scholars after their building was bombed on the night of 19th and 20th.

Councillor Mrs Muxlow visited the school which was assembled at 10.45a.m. in Little St to see the films of the National Savings van.  Mrs Muxlow talked to the children from the van.

A leak has been found in large boiler class III room.  Engineers have looked at it and declared it necessary to drain off the water from radiators in 5 classrooms.

After contacting LEA yesterday Headmaster went to Park Rd Assembly Rooms to look for space for two classes and to Highfield Baptist Mission for room for one class.  Poor attendance so we manage here by telescoping classes.

At 2.30p.m. Class V with Mrs Bennett(U) were sent to Highfield Baptist LCC school and atb 3.0p.m. Mrs Ash Class VI were sent to Park Rd Assembly School (Walthamstow evacuees).  Attendance better today so we must move.

A boiler has been borrowed by Mr Felce, Hot water Engineer, so the 5 classes returned to this school by 4.0p.m. today in readiness for Monday.

New boiler fairly satisfactory.  We shall carry on with it for the remainder of the heating season though radiators do not get as hot as formerly.

Mr Frank W Wright, a late member of the staff, paid us a visit.  He is now a Captain in the Royal Corps of Signals.  He always pays us a visit when on leave and we are pleased to see him though there remain but a few of his class in the school.

After children had drunk a bottle of milk and savings taken and canteen arrangements made children were sent home at 10.0 so that teachers could be free to canvass the district in readiness for tomorrow’s evacuation of 800 from London.

School re-opened 9.0a.m.  having been used as a Rest Centre sleeping 75 people it had to be thoroughly cleaned and the teachers were billeting up to Friday when they helped straighten up the school in readiness for normal working.

Headmaster, as Secretary of the Head Teachers Co-ordinating Committee, met the other HT’s of the town to discuss arrangements for the education of the fresh batch of evacuated children.  This done upon instruction from the Secretary of Education.

4 US soldiers representing a company of Engineers stationed in the town visited the school and gave each child a present of Candy saved from the company’s rations.  The gifts were very much appreciated by the children.
