Copy of Report by HMI Mr H N Parker following upon the visits of Mr A Woodhead, HMI, and Miss Courtenay, HMI, on 4th and 7th May 1937.

Mixed and Infants

Two important changes have taken place since the issue of the last report on this school; the Infant Department has been amalgamated with the Mixed, and a new Headmaster from another school in the County has been appointed.

Since his appointment the Headmaster has wisely preferred to attempt no drastic changes either in methods of teaching or in the curriculum but he has made his influence felt in many ways in different parts of the school.  His regular reports on the work of each class should be helpful to his staff both as an assessment of what has been accomplished and as an indication of what still remains to be done.

By his purposeful efforts he has won over his staff who are giving of their best according to their several capacities.

The children are easy to handle, respectful and obedient; they seem happy in their work and in the many activities provided for them.

Neatness in all written work was noticed throughout the school; indeed the penmanship in some classes was of a high standard though the quality of Composition in many cases could be improved.  Oral expression is receiving attention in the Junior forms where a pleasing response was heard.

Although the system of teaching Number in the lower classes does not appear to be fully effective, the level reached in Arithmetic higher in the school is generally satisfactory.  At the same time, it is felt that in most forms the teaching lacks the freshness usually associated with stimulating oral work.

History and Geography schemes are generally suitable in their content and some private study is done in the highest class, but a more graphical treatment is desirable with the younger children whilst systematic revision is necessary in the Senior classes.  Co-ordination of the very creditable Drawing with the recently introduced Bookcraft and Weaving is a point which should receive serious consideration if the Craftwork of the school is to develop on sound lines.
