The Rector who visited during the afternoon, as chairman of the Managers, requested the Head Teacher to write a strongly worded letter to the Caretaker respecting the unsatisfactory manner in which the duties are carried out.
The Head Teacher called the Rector’s attention to the Log Book entries of Oct 21st and Nov 30th last and wrote a letter of which the following is a copy:-
Madam,
I am again instructed by the Managers of the above school, who have been to inspect the premises, to write to you respecting the very unsatisfactory manner in which your duties are performed.
The condition of the floor throughout the school is deplorable, very little dusting appears to be done, the offices do not appear to be thoroughly cleaned and the teachers report it is a common occurrence to find at least one or more of the fires out upon their arrival at school in the morning.
The Managers view the matter very seriously and therefore inform you that unless avery considerable improvement takes place when the school meets in the New Year further measures must be at once taken.
I am
Yours faithfully

Dear Sir
I again respectfully beg to report to the Managers the very unsatisfactory manner in which the caretaker’s duties are performed. On reaching school this morning I found three fires out, and these the teachers were obliged to light before the children could be admitted. The wing room had apparently not been swept since Friday, whilst the offices go uncleaned from week to week.
As the caretaker appears to take no notice of requests for an improvement, I trust the Managers will deal with the matter.

As the result of an accident this afternoon the head of Eric Dickens was split open. The Head Teacher therefore sent him in charge of Mr Summerlin to Dr Greenfield but he being away from home the boy was at once taken to Dr Davies who attended to the wound.
The accident was caused in the following way:- Two boys, Harry Smith and Reginald Brown were playing with a ball when Smith accidentally caused Brown to stumble. Brown, in stumbling, came into contact with Dickens, causing him to fall against the railings in the yard with the result before stated.
Two teachers, Mrs Ballard and Miss Wilde were in the yard at the time but neither of them saw the accident actually take place.

Dear Sir
I beg to thank you for the help you have sent in the persons of Mr Billingham and Miss Lamerton to fill the vacancy temporarily on the staff of the above school. The former of the two previously named gave me the impression of being a highly efficient teacher whom I was extremely sorry to lose.
The lady, Miss Lamerton, I regret to say does not show the necessary vitality and power of control in handling her class with the result that the work and discipline alike are suffering.
Having always charge of a class of 40 children myself in addition to the duties of supervision I find it impossible to render much personal help to a weak teacher and should be very grateful if you would send me a teacher of proved worth whenever you have such an one available.

A boy named Thomas Cross (Std II), whilst at play in the school yard during yesterday’s dinner hour, happened to fall down and fracture his left arm. The only children who witnessed the occurrence were George Green 8 yrs and Hugh Wilmott 6 yrs, and from their statements and that of the boy himself it appears that Cross either slipped or stumbled whilst in the act of running. The Head Teacher only learned of the accident by seeing the boy’s arm in a sling as he was passing through the boy’s classroom this morning. The matter was at once reported to the County Education Secretary at Northampton.
By mistake Miss Howard closed Std VI Girls’ register at 1.45 instead of 2 o’clock and nos 33 and 34 who reached school at 2.48 were thus marked absent. Miss Howard at once called the Head Teacher’s attention to the matter and he at once corrected the error and here recorded the matter.

Report of HM Inspector Miss B M Dunn after visits on 6th and 9th Nov 1922:-
Mixed Department
The school has profited very decidedly by the strengthening in staff effected last year. The classes are constituted without Standard I (which has been retained in the Infants Department), and the Headmaster has disposed both his staff and his own supervisory and teaching work among the different divisions to considerable advantage.
The school still remains, for obvious reasons, one of some special difficulty, and it is the more credit to all concerned that substantial progress can be reported in a good many directions.
Among these are History, Drawing and oral English including Reading all of which show steady work bearing fruit. Sensible teaching is also being given in Arithmetic and Composition, though with a greater diversity of results. The weak points in these are well known to the Headmaster, who recognises the fact that the written exercises show somewhat slower advance. In the first class, however, this work too is developing, and many of the test answers, notes, and Compositions seen here were creditable.
An extension of independent work by the children in Geography is under consideration.
Some good associated Handwork is done by the older boys; but the scheme for Needlework requires further organisation, leading in some divisions to more comprehensive output.
Attention should continue to be paid to the question of classification, which though much improved is not yet wholly satisfactory.
The school leaves an impression of unity and cheerful co-operation, and the staff work loyally in response to the Headmaster’s lead. Their influence over the children is undoubted, and in no class did the tone and discipline appear to be other than good.

The Head Teacher drew Mr Lawrence’s attention to the very inadequate supply of gardening tools, particularly of hoes, and also to the very unsatisfactory state of affairs caused by three different schools using the one lot of tools and the one tool-shed.

Both Mr Lawrence and Mr Wyles expressed their great pleasure at the general appearance of the South End School garden and the promise of the crops.
