Diocesan Inspector’s Report
“The school has again shown the characteristics which Mr Brown has taught us to expect: accuracy, intelligence and eagerness. The one flaw in the syllabus is that the explanation of the Prayer Book Service as appointed by the Diocesan Syllabus is not taken; but the Inspector noted with pleasure, both last year and this, that much definite doctrinal teaching had been given in the explanation of the selected portion of the Catechism.
|
|
I have now almost completed the exam’n in all subjects and considering the broken attendances owing to measles, the results are surprisingly good.
The attendance fortunately has considerably improved being Boys93 %

|
“The syllabus of work in this department is carefully arranged, and the Headmaster’s supervision of the school is thorough and efficient. The teaching of Arith’c throughout the school appears to be successful and written exercises of all kinds are very carefully and neatly done. Much attention is paid to the practice of reading aloud, the use of the reading lessons as ameans of broadening the interests and extending the knowledge of the scholars especially in the upper classes will no doubt be given due prominence. Physical exercises are fairly well done; the want of privacy in the playground which is open to the main road adds to the difficulty of teaching this subject. Genrally speaking the progress of the scholars is very satisfactory. The ventilating windows of the large classrooms open directly on the girls’ and infanys’ offices. All these outbuildings are too near the school rooms.

I have been very much struck by the lack of desire to work and to progress in Standards 3 and 4. The children seem to lack all enthusiasm.
From today I intend to make a change in the timetable. Instead of teaching the two upper classes together as on the approved timetable I intend to take the 5th Standard as a separate class from 3.10 to 3.45, with History taken from 3,45 to 4.15pm.
I have now been in the school during 6 weeks, and the fact which appears to me to be the most striking is the willingness and industry of the staff. I am sorry to say that this spirit does not extend to the children whose industry is not so patent.

The following report received today from H M I through the Rector:-
Mixed Department
|
|
“A new Headmaster has taken charge of the school since it was last visited. The lessons are given generally on intelligent lines and there is every promise of continued good work. The master’s periodical reports are critical and suggestive and they should prove very useful for the class teacher’s guidance. The syllabus of instruction and the timetable might, with advantage, be modified as suggested at the inspection. Fire drill should be practised both here and in the Infants’ department. Many of the desks are of an old pattern and some are too high for the children using them.
Infants Department
No steps appear to have been taken to provide better school premises for the infants. The work is carried on under very unfavourable conditions, as has been pointed out in previous reports. Notwithstanding the difficulties met with the teaching is generally successful and some good results are obtained.
The conversational powers of the children might be further developed.
Suggestions were made at the inspection regarding the correlation of the lessons, and periodical reports on the various classes.”

The Repetition was in most cases excellent, as was also the written work of 1 and 2.
The upper groups were not quite so good possibly too much was attempted. Some very good abstracts were presented by the elder children. The singing of the ‘massed’ groups was very effective.”

Repetition was excellent, there being hardly a mistake in the Group. Several children showed distinct promise, and there was not much fallow ground.”

Copy of report received today from Mr G S Mason Correspondent manager.
Inspected on 14th Nov 1911
Report by H M I Mr L M Munro
“There are defects in the premises, but these are not mentioned in this report as it is understood negotiations are taking place with regard to the transfer of the management of these schools.
The teaching is intelligent, vigorous and effective, the excellent example set by the Head Teacher having permeated the whole school: the discipline moreover is excellent and the diligence of the scholars most marked.
All the written work is praiseworthy for style, neatness and accuracy. There is some weakness in Std 5 Arithmetic mainly due to the slowness of the pupils themselves, and the work of Std 3 is below that of the other classes.
Generally a very good standard of work is aimed at and very good progress is manifest. The scholars speak out well in Reading and answering.
