Copy of Government Report

Mixed School  “The new teachers deserves credit for working up the school to a state of very fair efficiency.  Admirable work was done in the first class, and the questions and answering were equally deserving of praise.  Greater control should however be exercised over the weaker members of the staff.  Mechanical methods should be repressed and a fixed provision made in the timetable for Mental Arith’c.  The Head Teacher should himself take a lesson in this subject in every class.  The shed erected as a boys’ cloakroom, if its use is to be continued, should be ventilated and paved.  The additional pegs in the porch should be removed.”

Leah B Hanger 2nd Year and Mabel J Fountain 1st Year P T, both passed “Well”.

I have now completed the examination of the 5th Period’s work and believe the school to have advanced very materially in efficiency, altho’ arith’c is not up to the standard of the other work.  Science and Geog’y are very good throughout and the children have acquired a good knowledge of the Sol fa method of singing.  This afternoon I have examined the specimens in Needlework in 5 and 6.  They are very neatly done, and the work is very satisfactory.

Miss Strachan has been absent all the week.

The attendance remains about the same owing to the non-interference of the authorities in the worst cases.

Mixed School

“The order is extremely good.  Intelligent methods are employed and the children evince much interest in their lessons in which they are making good progress – the examination papers and exercise books being extremely neat.

The supervision of the head teacher is in all cases close and effective.  In Needlework the girls should be taught cutting out and in the upper standards the garments should be cut out by the maker.  A good beginning has been made in physical training, but the playgrounds are much too small and the managers should endeavour to obtain the adjoining piece of ground for the boys’ playground.  The fence along the road might be replaced by a wall.  Some of the desks are very old and should be replaced by new ones.  The flooring of the wing classroom is in a bad state and the walls want recolouring.”

Infant School

The order is good, the teaching is brighter and the children take a keener interest in their work.  Considerable improvement has been effected and satisfactory progress is being made.  Free arm drawing might be introduced with advantage.  Some of the desks in the third class are unsuitable for infants and should be replaced with new ones.  There was an offensive smell arising from the adjoining farm yard.  The windows are too low – a good high window at each end of the room is needed.  There is only one exit from the school; this would be dangerous in case of fire and this defect should be remedied.

During the past fortnight I have examined the school throughout on the work of the 2nd term.

Reading has improved in all classes especially in St 1.  St 4 is weakest class in this subject.

Composition is progressing satisfactorily but Arith’c needs more attention in St 1 and 6.

Recitation and Science throughout are very good while Geog in no class falls below Good.

The attendance has been gradually growing worse, owing to the prevalence of measles and severe colds.

Owing to an influenza cold I was unable to attend school yesterday except for a few minutes in the morning, and came at 11 this morning.

School closed this morning for the usual Xmas holidays – two weeks.
