End of school year.
Copy of the Government Report
Mixed School. There has been an unusual amount of sickness during the year, for which I have made every allowance, but this is not sufficient to account for the serious falling off in the attainments of the children in all the work. Good results perhaps could hardly be expected in Arithmetic as the alternative scheme has been adopted for the first time, but there is an utter break down in this subject in the second third and fifth standards. Reading in the first standard is extremely poor and only fair in the second standard, it is good in the upper part of the school. Handwriting is fairly good on the whole, but spelling is very weak in the second, third and fourth standards. Mental Arithmetic needs attention throughout. Of the class subjects a good knowledge was shown of History in the upper standards, but Geography might be much better prepared. The school is quietly conducted, but in the lower standards there is much listlessness, and attention is seldom fully secured. Needlework is fairly good but buttonholing needs more attention. The children sing very nicely. The conduct of the boys in the playground requires the strict attention of the master. The ventilation of one classroom is defective.
E J Strachan has passed fairly but should attend to Music (skill).
A E Dames is continued under article 68.
The terms of Article 42 prevents the recognition of K M Fountain as a pupil teacher or S Hollis under article 33. The latter teacher failed to qualify herself for apprenticeship.
M A Burton, Grammar*, Composition*, Geography*, History*, Reading and Knowledge of Method.
E M Colson, Spelling*, Geography*, History*, and Needlework at examination.

Considering that the large upper group consisted for the most part of half timers, the results of the examination in their case demand special commendation.”

Copy of the Government Report
Mixed School - In spite of a somewhat crowded room and large classes the school is carried on very quietly and the tone is thoroughly good. In the upper standards are many half timers and the teachers have to contend against very irregular attendances, yet much good work has evidently been done during the year. The weakest points in the instruction are the Spelling in the second standard and Arithmetic in the second and third standards. The latter subject, although only fair, is steadily improving; it is good in the seventh standard. A very fair knowledge of History was shown, but the children speak very indistinctly and are allowed to answer simultaneously, which may account for some listlessness which is noticeable in several of the standards. Musical Drill is very satisfactory and the children especially in the upper division sing very nicely. The first class did very fairly on the whole in Geography, but here is much weakness in the lower part of the school in this subject. A globe is required. History too is very little above fair, and it is only by making some allowances that I recommend the higher grant. Needlework is good throughout.
M A Burton, E J Strachan, E M Colson have passed fairly; but Burton should attend to Writing and Music (Theory*), Strachan to Music (Theory and skill), Colson to History and Knowledge of Method*.
E L Munday is recognised under Article 68, and A E Dames is continued under that Article. L Hollis Failure Spelling*, Writing*, and Needlework at Examination.

Miss Annette D Bull commenced as assistant mistress Art 51 having passed the London Matriculation Exam. She has had no experience whatsoever in Elementary Schools and so I have put her for a time with Standards 6 and 7 so that she may learn from Miss Burton some methods of teaching and class management. I hope to put her to St 2 afterwards.

The Rev’d W R Morse and the Rev’d W Dewar visited this morning. The latter gentleman is the Diocesan Secretary of the Church of England Temperance Society and has promised to give a lecture tomorrow morning.
Received the Scripture Report from the Diocesan Inspector:-
“The school is in admirable order and the results of the examination confirmed in a great measure to Scripture was very satisfactory. Especial praise is due to the teachers who have had charge of St 5 7. Though the scholars here are for the most part half timers the abstracts written by them confirmed the impression made by the oral exam that the Bible stories had been taught with great thoroughness and skill”
Discipline and Tone:- “Excellent”
F P Lawson
Diocesan Inspector
|
|
The Rev’d D Dewar gave a Temperance Lecture this morning to the children instead of the usual Scripture lesson.
|
|
The Arithmetic should be much better this year especially in Standards 4 7.
The lower part of the school is the weaker in all their work. The writing of St 3 is bad but is improving. I have given special attention to this throughout the week.
The class has suffered through changes of teachers.
|
|
Have given a great deal of time this week to the lower standards, they are improving in their work but the arithmetic is weak in St 2.
Notice of the Drawing Exam on 7th April at 2pm received.
|
|
Holiday this afternoon owing to visit of Sanger’s Circus to Rushden.
The results of the exam in Drawing are fairly satisfactory. The “lining in” is weak in the upper standards in comparison to their sketching. There are many children among them who have no natural gift for drawing.
Sts 3 and 4 are fairly good.
|
|
Mary Burton left school early this afternoon owing to her mother’s illness.
|
|

I have examined all the school this week. St 2 seems most backward although they are showing great signs of improvement. They have had no less than five different teachers this year. St 5 are very careless in their arithmetic but they know how to do their sums. St 3 have improved very much in the character of their work.
|

|
|
I took temporary charge of the school this week during Mr Vann’s absence.
Children came from Infant Schools and those in standards here were advanced to higher ones. Miss Thompson, from Infant School 2 was appointed here as Assistant Mistress.
I find many of the children from Inf Sch No. 1 quite unfit for proceeding with St 1 work so I have divided St 1 into two parts; division 1 consisting of children from 1st class (Infant School)and division 2 for children who have been working in 2nd class (Inf School). The first div are proceeding to learn St 1 work, but the 2nd div I have put in charge of Miss Thompson to be taught the requirements of 1st class Infants; it being impossible to teach both divisions according to the same standard.

Copy of the Government Report.
Mixed School “The order and tone are good. History and Needlework throughout the school are generally satisfactory, and the carefully chosen and well learnt poetry deserves commendation. Many of the children in the first, third and fourth standards read very indifferently and show a very imperfect acquaintance even with ordinary words; and except in the sixth and seventh standards, few read with fluency and expression. Spelling is weak in the third and fourth standards, and Spelling and Composition need attention in the fifth standard. Arithmetic is inaccurate and lacking in intelligence in the third, fourth and fifth standards and not very strong in the sixth and seventh standards. Geography needs more thorough teaching especially in the third and fourth standards; but the children in the fifth standard showed a very fair knowledge of the map of Europe. The large number of children in the third standard renders the task of instructing them very difficult and the teaching staff generally should be strengthened. The exercises of the Musical Drill are creditably performed”
E J Strachan and E M Colson have passed fairly but Strachan should attend to Geography and Colson to Geography and History*.
Lily Hollis Arithmetic*.
C Munday is continued under Article 68.
Infant School No. 1. “The inconvenient and often overcrowded rooms, and the insufficiency and general insufficiency of the teaching staff render the task of conducting this school very difficult, and good organisation is nearly impossible. The infants are much too talkative and inattentive, and until habits of ready obedience prevail, no real progress can be expected. The classes are large and require efficient teachers who take a keen interest in their work. The medium grant under Article 98 (b) of the Code has been leniently recommended but greater improvement will be expected next year in all classes.”
Infants School No. 2. “The school is conducted in a very quiet and orderly manner and the children are creditably proficient in the elements of Reading, Writing and Numbers. Needlework, Drawing, Object lessons and varied occupations are satisfactory. Singing, Recitation and Musical Drill have evidently received due attention”
Your attention is requested to the small print of Article 78 of the Code. H M Inspector reports that the first and second classes in the Infants School No. 1. are habitually too large.
Care must be taken to prevent the occasional overcrowding in the Infants School No. 1.
The staff of the Infant School No. 1. Should be at once strengthened so as to meet the requirements of Article 78 which are not at present satisfied. Art 108.
M Fountain has passed fairly but must attend to History and Teaching (Practical skill and knowledge of method). B A ... and L Bird are continued under Article 68. E A Swann is recognised under Art 68 subject to her furnishing a satisfactory Medical Certificate on the enclosed form. Miss Bull’s Certificate should be forwarded and the enclosed form duly completed and returned to this office.
