The attendance this week has been very good.
Owing to this very mild weather the average attendance has been very good.
This morning I have altered the working of the classes of the school. Standard 1 now working in the large classroom under Miss Charity. Standard 2 in the small classroom under Miss Clarke and Standards 3 to 6 in the large school room to which has been added six new desks.
I think the children under this plan are more equally divided with respect to room.
The average attendance for this week has been 237 being one less than last week.
This has been a very wet and cold week and the average attendance has greatly decreased, it being only --- for the week.
This afternoon the Rev’d Canon J T Barker checked and called on the registers and found them correct.
This week the average attendance has remained below its earlier weeks.
The Rev’d Barker’s Scripture lesson was changed for tomorrow, Wednesday lesson being taken instead.
The average attendance this week has remained low 203. I presume on account of cold and wet weather.
Today I received some new stock.
This afternoon the Rev’d Canon Barker took Standards 5 and 6 in the Repetition.
This morning the school has opened well in numbers. I admitted two more children from Wymington.
The registers were not marked today because of the Religious Knowledge exam, this morning by the Diocesan Inspector and holiday in the afternoon.
This afternoon the Rev’d Canon Barker took Standards 5 and 6 in the Repetition.
The Rev’d Canon Barker and Rev’d Disney recommenced their Scripture lessons.
The average attendance this week was good 234.
The hunting meet taking place in the village this morning I dismissed the school at 11am. This afternoon many children away, only 203 present.
Arthur Ward commenced as paid Monitor in the school but F Denton was absent through illness.
Arthur Ward commenced to assist Miss Charity with Standard ---
F Denton has been away all the week suffering from sore throat but he is better and will probably recommence duty on Monday.
F Denton recommenced work and I have put him to Standard 3 while I try to push on the very dull and backward Standard 4.
Yesterday I examined Standards 4 and 6 in Writing and Arithmetic. Composition in Standard 6 and Arithmetic in Standard 4 was very poor.
Today I examined Standards 2 and 3 , the results being very fair.
I must mention the dullness of the half timers in Standard 4 to whom it seems impossible to work any interest in their work and whose progress therefore seems hopeless.
This week I have made a thorough [review] in Standard 4 Arith, who make such stupid mistakes in Standard 2 work. The other classes seem more hopeful.
On Tuesday and Thursday this week we gave secular lessons instead of Scripture. This week has been one of hard work on the part of the teachers, and steady progress. The numbers do not show any perceptible increase there being a number of the younger children absent.
This afternoon we broke up for the Easter holiday.
Re-opened school this morning after the Easter holiday with an attendance of 218.
The Rector this morning checked the registers.
This week we have been compelled to devote extra time to the 3 R’s as they seemed to require extra attention.
Today closed the school year. The great trouble and anxiety for some time past has been the very great drag of the half timers, keeping backward in their work.
This morning W E Curry Esq H M I and Mr Simpson his assistant commenced examining the school. Mr Simpson examined 4, 5, 6 in Arithmetic, Writing and Reading.
Yesterday and today the examination was continued and finished today.
The Duplicate Schedule returned this morning and the results shown by this are much as I expected they would be the percentage of passes being only 70. The result of this will be that the classes will be much better equalised than before in attainments.
This morning I rearranged the classes putting back in the same class most of those who failed in their Standards and thus making them more even in their attainments. I have received Infants from their schools.
The attendance this week has been fairly regular but still there are many away who I do not expect to see again till after Whitsuntide. The average attendance for the week has been 250.
This afternoon I closed the school for the Whit week holiday. The attendance this week has been very slack, owing no doubt to the approaching holiday. The Factory Inspector called this afternoon and looked up four of the worst cases.
Re-opened school this morning after Whit week holiday with a very fair attendance.
The average attendance for the past week has been 252. The classes are making steady progress but there are too many absentees which the Attendance Officer does not seem to have any effect upon.
This week the attendance has been a slight falling off upon the previous week.
This week there has again been a falling off in attendance.
The progress in this year’s work seems to show itself in the upper Standards. Standard 2 seems very dull and heavy to drag forward showing no interest in their work.
I received a copy of the report from the Rev’d Canon Barker, as follows
“The handwriting and spelling in the upper Standards need special attention. Reading and writing are generally satisfactory. The order should be firmer. English and geography are good. Needlework is very good.”
Amount of grant £207.0.2

The attendance this week has again declined, the average attendance being 233.
The school was closed today on account of the great number of children going for the Band of Hope excursion to Mablethorpe and the number of feasts around.
Opened school this morning with but poor attendance.
The average attendance for this week has been far below the averages for former weeks owing to band of Hope and Temperance excursions and the number of village feasts around. The average attendance was 214.
The average attendance this week has been 231, being an advance of 17. There are several children absent altogether, some away, and others obliged to be kept away because of measles in their houses. Mr Ellis is making a great effort to improve the spelling of the First class, but the stupid blunders of some are abominable.
Still continue to make progress. The attendance keeps up well in spite of some families keeping their children away on account of measles. The average attendance for the week was 234.
The attendance keeps well up although the weather is extremely hot and the harvest is just starting.
The attendance has fallen very much this week owing to the prevalence of measles and the harvest operations.
Closed school this morning for the harvest holidays. This afternoon promises a very enjoyable day for the treat, sports and prize giving.
Re-opened school this morning after 6 weeks holiday. All the teachers have returned and we began with an attendance of 232. Re-admitted Louise Clayton and Lily Stokes
The results shown from this week’s work testify to the amount of work forgotten during the long holidays. I have found it necessary to recommence again in Arithmetic and pay more attention to Spelling.
The Rev’d Canon Barker has gone to Germany for eight weeks.
The average attendance for this week is exactly the same as last week 227.
Sent Mr Clarke a list of half timers who have not returned to school.
The attendance has fallen this week to 222. I have sent a long list to the Attendance Officer but he seems unable to improve the worst cases.
This week the work has steadily gone on.
Today I have examined Standards 4 to 6 in the 3 R’s. Arithmetic was very fairly done in all Standards but Spelling seems almost hopeless, particularly the half timers.
This afternoon Miss Clark had leave from school therefore no needlework.
Yesterday I was away from school having gone to London. Left the school in charge of Mr Ellis.
I have sent a long list of absentees to the Attendance Officer but he seems unable to cope with the worst cases.
Miss Charity has been unable to attend school this week, suffering from quinsy.
Miss Charity commenced school but is evidently hardly strong enough.
The attendance this week has risen considerably, it being higher than at all since the harvest holiday. Average 235.
The school has this week done good work and progressed. The attendance too has been an improvement upon last week.
The weather this morning is very bad. There has been a heavy fall of snow, the attendance this morning is low. Arthur Ward is unable to attend school.
The attendance this week, owing to bad weather, has fallen 25 on the average.
Arthur Ward has been away ill all the week.
I have returned to school this morning after a fortnight absence, having been compelled to keep my bed, in consequence of a very bad throat. The school has gone on very satisfactorily under the supervision of Mr Ellis.
I A G C Vann took charge of the Mixed School. 198 were marked present in the morning and 222 in the afternoon.
All children who came to school punctually were marked in red ink. Late children were marked in black.
The Rev’d Canon Barker visited in the morning. In the afternoon I found that Standard 4 had not commenced their poetry.
In the afternoon I took Standard 1 in Arithmetic and found them very backward.
From what I had observed during Monday and Tuesday I concluded that the school was not in so satisfactory condition as the managers believed so I determined to give an examination to each Standard.
Commenced examining Standard 1.
Divided the Standard into three groups and examined each group separately.

The dictation was better, 7 having less than 5 mistakes and 3 more than four.
Three boys present in Standard 7 had a letter to write but failed completely.
The Grammar and Geography had scarcely been commenced.
Only the upper division 5, 6 and 7 had commenced their poetry.
Taking into consideration the great number of half timers in the upper Standards it will now be a difficult task to get all the children to learn their repetition before the end of the school year.
I showed the papers and results of the examination to the Rev’d Canon Barker and asked him to examine the children as soon as he could conveniently do so and he has promised to come. He said he would select the pieces of poetry for Standards 1, 2, 3 and 4.
I only partially examined the school in reading but found the children in upper standards very careless over little words.
Standard 1 had been taught to add and subtract by means of strokes. I told the teacher that a better method must at once be adopted and the children must be carefully watched to prevent its continuation.

Re-arranged the school for Scripture, dividing into four instead of three groups as formerly.
The school has done good work; the attendance has diminished owing to a great many children being away with colds average 209.
Received Diocesan report “The school on the whole passed a creditable examination in Scripture. The answering was best in Group 2. In Group 3 it was good in the case of the Elder one but poor in the part of the rest probably because so many of the children are half timers.”
