Miss P. M. Scott

Rushden Echo & Argus, 3rd April 1953, transcribed by Kay Collins

Fifty Years as Teacher - Fifty years in the teaching profession came to a close on Wednesday afternoon when Miss P. M. Scott, of Rushden. South End School, received a retiring gift from the headmaster, Mr. P. C. Astle.

During her long career, Miss Scott, who resides in Hall Avenue, has taught chiefly at Higham Ferrers and Rushden. More than 2,000 local people will remember being in her class at one time or another.

Mr. Astle paid tribute to Miss Scott's long service and mentioned that the gifts—a cheque, handbag and bouquet—had been subcribed to by pupils and staff of the school, ex-pupils at Wellingborough Grammar and High Schools, Tennyson Road County Modern School and North End Secondary Modern School, and several ex-teaching colleagues and friends.

'Pol' Scott
Frances M Scott - known as 'Pol'
Frances M Scott (known as Pol) was a pupil teacher in 1901. She taught at Higham Ferrers for the next 30 years, as she was appointed as an Uncertified Teacher at South End School in August 1934.

Frances may have returned to Rushden to care for her ailing mother as in June 1935 her mother Louisa died.

In 1936 Frances took charge of Class 3 and taught 46 children. She did not enjoy good health, as the Log Book records many days off during the following years.

Her pupils thought she was very strict! She was also recorded in the Log Books as going to Newton Road School as an invigilator.

Her father, a noted member of St Mary's Church, died in 1949 aged 90.
