Playground Games

How life in the playground has changed at Denfield Park Junior School

Playground games have changed over the years. Modern games tend to usually involve more than one person, whereas games years ago tended to be played on your own according to Jordan Jenkins’s Nan and Harriett Cookson’s granny.

Jordan’s Nan gave a quick recount of what she used to play on the Playground during her eleven years at junior school. She gave a long list of what she used to play which included hopscotch, skipping, British bulldog, tag, chase, piggy in the middle and stuck in the mud.

Today at Denfield Park there are many similarities. Children play chase games and bulldog is played on the field. We are lucky because we have a huge field, and endless amount of resources. These include using tennis balls, skipping ropes, and parachutes.

We have sports-leaders to conduct games at playtimes. These games consist of: cricket, croquet, completing obstacle courses and using hula hoops. Pupils at Denfield benefit from these games, as it encourages them to play sports out of school.

At Denfield Park Junior we have an eighty-metre sprint course marked out on the field. At playtimes children like to create a challenge for themselves by racing children with higher running abilities.

Children have increased opportunities to be active at school but they always need to be encouraged to look after the equipment properly. We are lucky that provision at playtime has improved but traditional games are still very popular indeed.
