The following is the report of the “Bird and Arbor” judge on the work from this school.

North End School Rushden takes the third place in the contest. The birds here are the families House Sparrow, Hedge  Sparrow and Starling and the trees are Hazel, Horse chestnut and Sycamore. All the papers sent in are by girls, only two boys being in the team. These again are very long and full and written in a graceful and pleasing style which makes them interesting and agreeable to read. The distinction between the Hedge Sparrow and House Sparrow is well understood and Elsie Elsdon does well in calling attention to the sweet little warble of her bird, one of the first songs heard in spring. It is a misfortune that this species should be called a “Sparrow” as it belongs to the warbler family and is not related to the hard billed House Sparrow. It has also the names of Dunnock and Accentor and is sometimes called the Shufflewing, from the way in which it moves it wings when on the ground. The teacher has probably wisely discouraged the children from attempting to make drawings of nests, for fear of disturbing the birds but some extremely good pencil drawings illustrate the tree papers. Perhaps the best of these is that on the Hazel by Elsie Saddler but all show intelligent observation and a better grasp than is usual with young writers. Elsie Saddler’s paper on the Starling is also notably excellent. Medals to Florrie Gross, Elsie Saddler, Elsie Elsdon and Hilda Brown.
