16th July 1926

Formal opening of New Practical Institute Rooms by Sir Arthur and Caprice Brooke, chairman of the County Council, Mr. Hands HMI, the Secretary who attended along with members of County Council and Rushden Sub-Committee.

Half holiday in afternoon.

Dec 1940

Sale of Work.

This afternoon a sale of Articles made by the children from oddments was held in the school. Many of the articles were suitable to give as Xmas presents and had been made by the girls under the supervision of Mrs. Hensman, Miss Buttling and Mrs. Gardam, also helped considerably. As a result of the sale £21-14-8 has been handed to the local Red Cross Fund. £10 was handed over last year the proceeds of a similar sale.

About 20 boys are absent from school for varying periods picking potatoes for local farmers. Parents consent must be given for child to be employed on this work.

24th May 1942

Empire Day 1942

Empire Day Celebrations held in school – Union Jack hoisted. The following programme was carried out. Guide, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs present in uniform with their standards.

Dec 7th 1942

The Fourth Annual Sale of Work was held in the school hall at 2.15pm in the afternoon. A sum of £72-3-0 was raised. Of this sum £54-2-3 has been handed to the W.V.S. Local Red Cross Fund” (75% of the total raised) and £18-0-9 will be retained to buy a school Wireless Set. The money owing for the collection of hips, nettles and horse chestnuts has not yet been received by me from the Local Committee (Herb collecting)

Sept 4th 1943

A new 4 valve wireless receiving set has been purchased for school use – cost of set and installing same £16-5-0. Half the cost of this has been paid out of school funds (£8-2-6) and half by the L.E.A. the set is the property of the L.E.A.

Jan 10th 1944

Total amount raised at the Red Cross Sale of Work held on December 10th last was £150-1-3. ⅜of this has been forwarded to the Rushden W.V.S. Red Cross Fund; ⅜ to the Red Cross and St. John’s Prisoners of War Parcels Fund St. James’ Palace London; ⅛ to the Local After Care fund; ⅛ to School Funds.

Mar 11th 1948

The first Annual Prize Giving was held this afternoon in the school hall. Mr. J. Holland – chief Education Officer presented the prizes and spoke on “The Modern Secondary School and the Extra year.” I gave my report on the work of the last 2 years. The following governors were present Messrs. T. W. Cox, E. A. Sugars, J. Bailey, W.E. Capon, E. Freeman, Mesdames E. L. Barker, Masters, Sherwood and Miss Clipson. Apologies were received from Mr. D. F. Walker, Mr. F. Tyson, Mr. A. Allebone and Mr. C. G. Faulkner. Mr. T. W. Com was chairman.

It was a very interesting and pleasing ceremony and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The school choir sang two songs – also a duet by the Ellis sisters. A photograph was taken of the proceedings by a press photographer. Tea was provided for the governors. Twenty two prizes were awarded the following children receiving them. 15th Oct 1948

140 children attended the Co-operative Hall to see films on “Pest Control” exhibited by the Urban District Council (Senior Sanitary Inspector). This visit ranks as an Educational visit – Education office was notified.
2pm 100 children. 3.15pm 40 children.

Feb 11th 1949

Girls under the charge of Miss Williams (Domestic Science) attended a Cookery Demonstration and Lecture by Bird’s Custard Co. demonstration from 10–11.15am.

July 14th 1949

The following boys from this school have passed the Entrance Examination to Wellingborough Junior Technical School and will commence there in the Autumn Term.

July 26th 1949

Closed school this afternoon (Tuesday) in order to move the furniture from Moor Road School into the new Tennyson Road Buildings. It has been stored there for the past year. The school would normally have closed on Thursday next 28th July at 4pm. After the August holidays the school will become a Girls’ School and will be in charge of a Headmistress. I have been headmaster here since the death of Mr. Perkins in 1938.
