The report from the judges of the Bird and Arbor Competition read as follows: - North End Council School Rushden takes a thoroughly deserved third place. The three bird essays are all admirable. F. Chattells, on the blackbird is full of true and careful observation and it is remarkably well and thoughtfully written. Elsie Saddler gives a charming account of the Hedge Sparrow, showing full knowledge of the differences between it and the House Sparrow and daintily expressed appreciation of its pretty little warble. John O’Connor has watched the Sand Martin closely, but the judges are very curious to hear how he found access to a tunnel two feet long made by the bird for its nest. The same intelligence and the same exactitude appear in the papers on Trees, the Sycamore by Leonard Eagles being in particular, a wonderfully painstaking piece of work. It is strange how little attention the flowers of both this tree and the Lime get in proportion to that devoted to buds and leaves; the details are slighter and the strong scent of the Lime flowers is not even mentioned. Annie Lilley shows an artistic feeling in her very good description of the Laburnum. She should make a note of the fact that the seeds are very poisonous.
