Musical Honours for a Rushden Lad—At an examination held at Northampton on the 9^th inst. In conjunction with the London College of Music, Master G Wingrove, of Irchester-road, succeeded in obtaining an Honours Certificate for pianoforte playing and theory, (intermediate section). He was prepared by Mr W Hopkins, a late special pupil of Professor E H Turpin, of London.

Gas Manufacture—Mr Arthur Codgbrook has passed first-class in the Honours Grade at the gas manufacture examination, held on April 29th. Great credit is due to Mr Codgbrook who was self-coached.

The Degree of Bachelor of Science (first-class) has been obtained at Birmingham University by Mr. Francis Samuel Pitt, son of the M.R. station master at Rushden. Mr. Pitt, B.Sc., who is 21 years of age, gained a County Council scholarship at the Newton-road school and proceeded to Wellingborough Grammar School, where he remained four years. Then he went to the Birmingham University for three years. He will follow the teaching profession.

Mr. Fred Darnell, son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Darnell, of Church Street Rushden, has been appointed Quarter-master of the S S Campania, a Cunard liner, Liverpool to New York. Mr Darnell has been staying in Rushden since he left the Navy, and he journeyed to Liverpool on Monday to join his ship.

Mr. Harry Darnell, another son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Darnell, left Rushden on Tuesday for Borough Road Training College, London where he will prepare for the scholastic profession. Mr. H. Darnell, who is only 18 years of age matriculated at the London University early during the present year; afterwards he passed the Preliminary Certificate examination with distinction in French, history, mathematics and science; and since then he has passed the Oxford Senior Local Examination – a creditable record.

Mr Wilfred E Capon, secretary of Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd., Rushden, has passed the Intermediate examination of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries.

Rushden Scholar’s Success – Civil Service Examination
Mr Cecil George, who recently, as a student at Wellingborough School, headed all England in the Oxford Senior Local Examinations in arithmetic, has now been successful in passing the Civil Service Examination, and he will shortly take up an appointment under Government.

There were about 800 candidates for the examination, and Mr George secured the 81st place.

He is the son of Mr and Mrs Josiah George, of Pightles-terrace, Rushden.

Pte. Cyril A. G. Slater, of the Army Ordnance Corps, son of Mr. R. G. Slater, of Pratt-road, Rushden, has received a first-class certificate in accounting from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers, and Commerce, London, having successfully passed the society’s commercial examinations, advanced stage.

The B.Sc.—Miss Phyllis Harris, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Harris, of Newton-road, Rushden, has passed first class in the B.Sc. examination at Liverpool University. Miss Harris, B.Sc., has accepted an appointment as Science Mistress at East Dereham.

Miss Doreen Putnam has passed the Senior Examination of Trinity College of Music with very high marks.

MISS ADA MANTLE, a pupil at the High School, Wellingborough, daughter of Mr. Arthur Mantle, school attendance officer, of Rushden, has passed the Oxford Senior Local Examination, held in December.

Mr. Frank Litchfield, of 8, Gordon-street, Rushden, was successful in passing the Intermediate Examination of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, for which he sat in December last.

Appointment – Our congratulations to Mr. Wilfred T. Lack of Brookfield Road, Rushden, who has been appointed Science Master of the Grammar School at Great Yarmouth. Mr. Lack commences his duties on September 23rd after the vacation. Since he gained his degree (with honours) Mr. Lack has been made an Associate of King’s College, London, where he received the later part of his education.

Teacher’s Diploma—At the autumn examinations of the London Chamber of Commerce, Mr. E. Murdin, A.C.I.S., of Rushden, was successful in passing “with distinction” and examination for a teacher’s diploma in advanced book-keeping and accountancy.

At the Royal Society of Arts spring examinations in book-keeping held at the Newton-road Evening Schools the following candidates were successful: Stage 1, Leonard Smith, Edna Ekins, Edna Bates, M Willoughby, Francis Clark, Sydney Johnson, Sydney Hawkes, Cara Squires; Stage 2, A R Smith, Francis Clark.

Success—Mr Sidney Hawkes, of Church-street, has successfully passed the intermediate examination of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries (London).

Miss Alice E Ellingham, of 116 High-street, Rushden, has passed with honours the senior examination in pianoforte playing in connection with Trinity College, London. Miss Ellingham is a pupil of Mr J Enos Smith, of Rushden.

Mr Allen Ladds, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Ladds, of Moor-road, Rushden, has been successful in passing the final examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Miss Peggy Webb (right), a student at the Misses Robinson and Pryor's Dancing Studio, Rushden, has been successful in passing the Elementary Examination of the Association of Operatic Dancing of Great Britain.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Hawkes, of "Rosemount", Irchester Road, Rushden, Roy S. Hawkes has been awarded a BSc with second class honours in electronics at London University.

Silver Medal—Seventeen-year-old Anthony Higgins, 6 Denton Close, Rushden, has obtained a silver medal for acting and a bronze for peaking verse and prose, both with honours, at the Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art.
