The work of the school has been very upset since the last half year. The Head Mistress and head assistant left the town for three months the school was under a supply Head Teacher and since then the term has been very broken up in attendances etc.. A supply teacher has been in charge of the transition class for three months. She has done good work but the class has not reached the standard it should have done because the work was interrupted at avery important stage. Fifty children will be promoted to the upper department. Miss Taylor, a young uncertificated teacher, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on this staff. We hope, after the Summer holiday to begin a new settled period when the work can be got again to the desired standard.

Copy of Report by H M I on Inspection dated May 11th 1936
|
|
The new Head Mistress, who was appointed 12 months ago, has brought to the school a refreshing spirit, receptive of modern ideas, yet tempered by experience and common sense. She has made changes and continues to do so, but it is by no means revolutionary, giving her staff opportunity to accustom themselves to the new outlook and, at staff conferences, to voice their views on the conduct of the school as it affects their work.
The most promising enterprise so far attempted has taken place in the lowest class where a nursery atmosphere has been developed. Simple apparatus and furniture, such as cupboards and boxes have been improvised, toys have been purchased or made by the Head Mistress and the class teacher, parents have supplied towels and bowls have been procured. Tables and chairs have replaced dual desks and, in order to secure adequate space, two classrooms have been united by the displacement of a movable partition. The children thoroughly enjoy themselves, their many activities are purposeful, yet there is plenty of freedom for individual development and the social training is excellent. Greta credit is due to the Head Mistress for her inspiration and help, and to the class teacher for the way in which she has entered into the spirit of the new venture. Success is apparent already.
The transition to more formal activities in the next class is somewhat abrupt and the teacher responsible, who works hard and establishes a good foundation in the basic subjects, would do well to try to make the change less formal in character.
In the latter stages up to and including stansard 1 the difference between the able and slower scholars is marked. The teachers are trying hard to secure greater uniformity and the methods of teaching employed are usually suitable.
On the recreative side experiments are being made in Handwork of various types and in Drawing. Simple dramatization is also attempted. Good use is made of the Hall for Rhythmic Exercises, Singing and, when the weather is inclement, for Physical Training. Morning assembly is conducted with simple dignity in a form well adapted to the age of the children and should help to foster the beginnings of a healthy corporate spirit.

School closes at four pm for Easter holidays. Re-opens April 5th.
The attendance all through the term has been very poor owing to colds and, during the last week or two, an epidemic of chicken pox. As far as possible with so many absentees, a very good term’s work has been done. The work for the year is well in hand. The classes will have to be re-arranged owing to the big number of admissions to the Nursery class. The present Std 1 B will have to be merged into Std 1 and class 1and a new one formed of the old and backward section of classes 1 and 2. Owing to the classroom that is used by the senior department not being available, this class will have to use the upstairs room for one or two parts of each session, but will only use it under the personal supervision of the Head Teacher.

School closes at 3.45pm for Summer holidays, to re-open on Aug 30th.
The years work has been greatly handicapped by continuous epidemics. Only in four weeks during that time, since Sept 1936, has the percentage of attendance reached 90, and for 13 weeks has not even reached 80%. Consequently in many individual cases the standard of work desired has not been reached. With those children who have been able to attend regularly, a very high standard has been attained. Some really good work has been done.
Sixty five children are being promoted to the Upper Department.

On the whole the attendance has been quite good this term and in consequence a good term’s work has been done. In each class a good foundation has been laid in the three essential subjects and the more recreative subjects have been thoroughly enjoyed and well done by the children. AS far as is known, we shall not have enough new entrants to justify removals from class to class, so the second term should prove very useful to consolidate what has been done already, if the attendance allows.

The term’s work has been severely affected by a bad epidemic lasting six weeks and actually affecting the attendance for a further three weeks. However the work is well in hand and given favourable circumstances in the next term should reach a good normal standard.
The classes will have to be somewhat re-organised. The present Std 1 B will have to be divided between Std 1 and class 1and the upper section of the second class will have to be made into a new division in charge of the Head Teacher. For this the class 2 timetable will be used.

School closes this afternoon for 1 month Summer holiday.
On the whole the standard of work reached is not quite what was aimed at except in the case of Standard 1 who have done remarkably well. Three other classes have suffered badly by change of teachers (two changed in two cases) and by a bad outbreak of measles in Feb and March which almost kept these classes empty for weeks. However Miss Crowther Green, who is a newcomer to the permanent staff, has done some solid work with her class and they are now ready for good progress. The next class has suffered rather badly from two inexperienced teachers when they were at the point of being ready for more advanced work. Miss CG will doubtless pull them up.
For the present Miss Alderman will not be replaced and the Head Teacher will take her grade. Fifty six children have been promoted to the big school.

Four schools viz St Patrick’s Walthamstow, Aldenham St L C C, Forest Rd Walthamstow, and Higham Hill Infants’ Walthamstow were admitted and 19 unattended children. Two of the latter have since been transferred. On the following day St Patrick’s decided tot join up with the Junior School and work a single afternoon session on theses premises. A further school, Prospect Terrace L C C came up on Wed and decided to alternate with St Patrick’s and take the morning session in their room. Since the Aldenham St have decided to run a morning session only on these premises because of the long distances their children have to walk to school. The only room available is upstairs but the Head Teacher has taken sole responsibility.
