Copy of Report by H M I Mrs Garside - Inspected on October 24th 1928
|
|
The general standard of achievement in fundamental subjects continues to give evidence of the sound preparation given in the school. The elements of Reading are well taught in the lower classes and consequently the older children are able to read fluently and with understanding. In number the results are, as might be expected, more uneven. The written work is carefully set out and a fair degree of accuracy is attained; but there is place for problem work taken orally. The intelligence of the older children does not always appear to be stretched to a legitimate degree and they failed to make a good show in mental and oral work on the day of inspection.
There was evidence of creditable work in Writing and Composition but it is desirable that the children should not depend too much on the teacher’s help in Written English.
Some good Recitation was heard, but much might be done for the children by a systematic attempt throughout the school to improve their general speech, which is at present somewhat indistinct. Something is being done in this direction with the lowest class.
It is satisfactory to note that Handwork and Music are not neglected.
The staff are earnest worker, willing to co-operate with the Head Mistress and really interested in the welfare of the children. Much praise is due to them for their industry in making apparatus the efforts of the teacher of the lowest class in this direction are worthy of special commendation. If they had more confidence in their powers, allowing themselves more elasticity in method, this giving greater scope to the children’s freshness of outlook and joy in progress, they might lay even better foundation for the more formal work that is to follow.
The Head Mistress has every reason to be confident that the work is developing on the right lines and that she may go forward with good courage.
This I believe to be a correct copy of H M I report

Copy of Report by H M I Mr Sweeting
Inspected on 21st and 23rd October 1931
|
|
The Head Mistress who was appointed early in 1927 can now see the results of her own control of method and syllabus here; backed by teachers who are really anxious for the children’s good, she has succeeded in providing a thoroughly sound and well graded beginning to these Infants’ education. Much care is taken with backward children, whether they have lost ground through illness or any other reason; and such are always promoted directly their progress justifies it. Reading is still well taught in all the classes; so that the standard reached in the top class is high. The schemes and method in the teaching of Number are now working very well; the Teacherrs have made a great number of carefully graded apparatus and sets of questions, and the system of recording individual progress is simple but effective; there is now plenty of problem work given directly the children are able to read confidently, and the Standard 1 work is consequently quite good in accuracy and setting out. Written English in the two top classes shows definite improvement and more individuality than before.
Speech training has also received more attention, but the effects are not yet so good as have been secured in other directions.
Musical Games, Singing and Dancing are used from the beginning of school life here to train the children in observation and accuracy of movement, and are used so well that every child enjoys this form of learning.
Handwork iss well graded and includes plenty of variety; the children are all ready to talk about this work and explain what they have made.
In Needlework the girls are using materials and needles rather more suited to Standards 2 or 3, and the accomplishment rather suffers in level.
The steady efforts of the staff under sound direction have produced this most satisfactory result. Commendation is also due to the Caretaker for his good work.
This I believe to be a correct copy of H M I report.
