Copy of H M I’s Report received 22.11.22
|
|
“The Head Mistress habitually gives much earnest thought to the welfare of her school, which has during the last two years benefitted by certain definite progressive measures e.g. the establishment of a closer connection with the work of the senior department; and the investigation and application by the staff of new and contemporary methods of proved worth.
The general aspect of the work has decidedly improved. Any inclination to formal teaching has now almost disappeared, and a real and profitable endeavour has been made to utilise the children’s natural activities towards individual progress.
Results seen in the different classes are influenced by the teachers’ varying degrees of resource in manipulating sectional lessons; and to these results explicit reference was made at the time of inspection.
In general however more speech and ear training is advisable in connection with the early Reading occupations; and prompter mental revision of the steps mastered by means of apparatus in the number work.
A more transitional treatment is desirable in the case of the lower sections in Standard 1a; while the promising upper division of the class could well work on a more extensive scheme in view of the fact that they will probably proceed to Standard 2 in a few weeks time.
Advantage is taken of the excellent premises for the more active recreational lessons, and physical exercises, games and Rhythmic movements are a good feature.
The singing of the older children, though clear, is somewhat harsh; and a beginning of staff notation should be hastened in Standard 1. Credit is due for a marked improvement in Recitation and Dramatisation as the result of steady work; though in the poetry lessons might be given to Rhyme and Rhythm.”

Copy of Report by H M I Miss B M Dunn
|
|
“There is much that is good and sound in the preparation given in this school. Sectional methods have been carefully studied, and all carried out with the utmost conscientiousness; and with alittle more enterprise in their application the actual results would be better than they are.
Word-building and its correlation with writing are very creditable throughout, but spelling is still not very strong, and this may be partly traceable to the rather prevailing indistinctness in the children’s speech and Reading on which comment was made at the inspection. The Recitation heard was on the other hand clearly delivered. The use of oral composition could probably be developed with benefit in the various directions mentioned to the Head Mistress.
Number-work has on the whole improved.
The highest section of Standard 1 are advancing proportionally to their age, and the capable teacher may it is hoped be relied upon to meet the needs of the more backward section at the bottom of the class.
In the three lowest classes only about 40% of the children were present owing to the beginnings of epidemic illness in the school. The teaching therefore was hardly representative and in recreative subjects was much hindered. A word of praise is however due to the pleasing manipulation of fundamental work in the lowest class.”
