“The Infants School continues to be taught upon sound methods, with creditable results. The tone of the school is throughout pleasant and there is evidently in most classes an increasing measure of freedom. In one or two classes the children might be encouraged to express themselves more freely with advantage.
The ages of the children in the top two classes are above the average: the children are however to receive instruction more suitable to their age so that their progress in the upper school may be facilitated.”

Copy of Report by H Hartley Esq H M I
|
|
“This school is very much disorganised as the result of faulty heating arrangements. For the past 4 or 5 years three of the classrooms on the north side of the school have been useless for teaching purposes during the severe weather of the winter months. Since the end of December Standard 1 and class 1 have been accommodated in the hall and will remain there till the warmer weather renders the disused classrooms habitable. This arrangement has been necessary for the past five years.
The seating accommodation in the hall is also unsatisfactory; low forms which are not provided with back rests of any description have to be used by one or other of the classes.
At present the school appears to be understaffed. The teacher of the Babies’ class left on February 7th and her place has not yet been filled, with the result that the Head Mistress is now tied to a class though some members of the staff require much supervision.
The general atmosphere of the school is somewhat disappointing. The tone and discipline are good and the children are happy in their work but the teaching, especially in the lowest classes, is much too formal and should be made brighter and more attractive.
Repression is carried too far, and an endeavour should be made to utilise the natural activities of the children in various directions. Unfortunately the necessity of accommodating two classes in the hall precludes its use for games physical exercises etc. in the winter months, at the very time it is most needed.
