Report by H .M. Inspectors
17th. and 18th. November 1958.
There are 253 children on the roll of the school accommodated in premises that, although built about fifty years ago, are comfortably heated, well lighted and ventilated. Provision includes a hall and a separate classroom for each class. There Is no recognised staffroom, but a spare room on the first floor could be adapted easily to furnish this necessary addition. An air-raid shelter, damaged by fire a few years ago and now in a state of disrepair, occupies useful playground space. Midday meals are served to eighteen children in a central dining hall, also used by other schools, over a quarter of a mile away. Both meals and supervision at the time of Inspection were admirable.
Most of the children are admitted in September at the age of four years, thereby giving a full three years course of infant work. In Glass VI, under the guidance of a mistress who is sensitive to the needs of very young children, they enjoy their many purposeful activities and follow a daily programme that is calculated best to serve their Individual development and social needs.
For the first two years there is an informal approachwhich builds up confidence in the children, enabling them to progress individually at an appropriate pace. Close co-operation between the assistant mistresses ensures complete continuity in work and method; the transition to formal work is gradual and successfully planned to meet immediate needs. Reading Is capably taught. A plentiful supply of supplementary books Is to be found in every classroom, but at the top of theschool there is a large number of worn-out books that might well be discarded From the beginning the children are encourage to talk to the teacher and to the class, and to listen others. The Importance of acquiring the habit of clear speech is stressed. Constant practice In free writing during the early stages enables the older children to write down their own Ideas in a neat and readable form. Adequate apparatus, some of it Improvised by the teachers themselves, allows the early stages of number to be handled with competence.
Thoroughness is the keynote at the top of the Schoolwhere emphasisis more on class teaching, although group work plays an important part In dealing with the skills of reading and number. The oldest children, who constitute class I, are taught with marked earnestness and conviction, and their solid effort produces a high standard of achievement in number and in formal written exercises. The emphasis placed on neatness and accuracy la considerable. There is an abrupt change in the method of teaching readingto the slower children at this stage, and reading generally, though reaching highstandards here and there, is hand led somewhat inflexibly.
All children are given daily opportunities for occupying themselves in groups of educational activity with, a minimum of direction, and the older onesshow a growing ability to use art and hand work materials imaginatively. The school has its percussion band and , with every classroom wired for radio reception, broadcast lessons are followed when applicable. A recently acquired filmstrip projector has been sensibly used in connexion with a wide variety of lessons. An assembly for a simple religious service is held In the hall each morning.
The quality of the work in this School is good. Most of the children are developing habits of industry and a sense of personal responsibility. From time to time open days are arranged to enable the parents to see the work of the children and to discuss their progress.
