01 Aug

School closes at noon for the Summer holiday of four weeks.  Each teacher will be in the vicinity of Rushden during two weeks of that time.

Milk has been ordered  - and paid for in advance – for 44 children for the holidays and teachers will attend each morning to distribute it.

Seventy nine children will be promoted to the Junior Schools – 52 native, 14 Walthamstow, 12 L C C, 1 Colchester.

The term has been much more settled than the two previous ones, and organisation has been helped by merging all the evacuated schools with the native.  This would have been a great help if we had not suffered during the whole term with an epidemic of whooping cough causing the attendance to be a fluctuating one of only just over 71%.  Those children who have been able to attend regularly have done some good work.  Fortunately Std 1 and class 1 did not suffer and the work in these two classes is quite up to standard.  The work in class 1 being exceptionally well done.  The other classes have suffered very much by almost termly promotions – caused by evacuations, merging etc. – many children having been in three classes in three terms – some more.  Their work therefore has no where had a chance of proper consolidation, and their age group will consequently put them into a class above their attainments in many instances.  WE are as far as possible grading the 5+ - 6+ group into groups of ability, hoping in the course of the 12 months to get each group as near as possible to the attainment we should like to expect.

01 Sep

School re-opened this morning after Summer holiday.

26 children were admitted (2 evacuees).  The teachers attended each day during the holiday to serve milk.  Out of 138 bottles ordered daily about 130 children came regularly.

19 Dec

School closes at noon for the Christmas holiday (2 weeks)

The work of the term has been very satisfactory.  On the whole the attendance has been good.  Illness amongst the staff caused some disturbance in the classes but the work was well in hand in each case and the results have not suffered.

After the holiday one of the evacuated teachers (Mrs Bower – Deptford) is retiring, and this will entail re-organising the classes.  The children in her class will be augmented by additions from other classes and the classes will be one fewer.  We hope therefore to re-open the Nursery room to the full so that the babies may once again have the benefit of plenty of room and all their toys and apparatus.

The school year finishes today.  Fifty three native children will be promoted and thirty evacuees

The year’s work on the whole is quite satisfactory.  Particularly good work has been done in the top two classes where it has been possible to keep almost the same children the whole of the year.  The reading and number in these two classes has reached a particularly high standard.  The rest of the school has suffered somewhat by ever changing numbers but on the whole a fair standard has been attained.  The reading and number have been given a good start and should be able to do well in the next year.  Music and dancing (save class 1) has suffered a great deal through lack of teachers who can play.  Physical Training is good.  Speech training could be better.  Handwork is good with material available.

The attendance during the year has suffered through two or three epideemics.  Nearly every child has milk daily and most have 2 bottles when available.  The canteen dinners are attended by 38 – 44 children daily.
