National School Festival 1880

This poster came from a bundle of what we think may have been printers' proofs. Most are printed on the backs of old posters.

Although it is undated, the events are in the same order as the newspaper report below, except the final event does not seem to have been reported - the Long Jump for girls under 12.
Rules were:

Scholars will not be allowed to compete in any races unless they have entered their names for the same two days before the Festival.

Entries by day Scholars will be received by Mr Warren.

Entries by Sunday Scholars will be received by the Sunday School Teachers or by Mr Ruddle.

Scholars giving a wrong age will be disqualified.

No Scholar to take more than one first prize.

NATIONAL SCHOOL AND CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL FESTIVAL—The following was the programme of the sports at this festival, a brief report of which appeared in last week's News:—

100 yards flat race for boys under 9 years of age—1, H. Lewis; 2, A. Wickens (41 entries).

150 yards race for boys under 12—1, F. Dickens; 2, G. Butcher (57 entries).

200 yards race for boys under 15 —1, J. Knight; 2, J. Stevens (23 entries).

Quarter-mile race (open)—1, C. Alderman; 2, S. Allen (28 entries).

50 yards race on all fours, run in heats - final heat, 1, T. Baker; 2, J. Austin (32 entries).

100 yards three-legged race—1, W. Clark, H. Lewis; 2, J. Austin, F. J. Denton.

High jump, 2in. per year allowed—1, C. Alderman; 2, A. Wilmott (42 entries).

Long jump, 3in. per year allowed—1, H. Clark; 2, C. Alderman (20 entries).

Throwing cricket ball—1, H. Clark; 2, F. Denton (27 entries).

100 yards flat race, to be run backwards—1, A. Abbotb; 2, F. Bayes (30 entries).

50 yards flat race for girls under 9—1, M. Hanger; 2, J. Walley (43 entries).

50 yards flat race for girls under 12—1, J. Walley; 2, A. Warren (38 entries).

150 yards race for girls under 15—1, A. Ette; 3, E. Perkins (16 entries).

50 yards flat race, to be run backwards—1, M. Lewis; 2, F. Skinner and S. Faulkner (dead heat for second place).

Skipping match—1, L. Close; 2, E. Bollard (58 entries).

Skipping race, run in three heats —first heat, A. Warren; second heat, A. Ette; third heat, F. Skinner (40 entries).

50 yards egg race—1, M. Perkins; 2, A. Warren (33 entries).

Precisely at half-past six the Day School prizes were distributed. These were given for regularity and attention to home lessons. The prize-takers were:-

First Class—Walter Rhodes, Emmie Knight, Kate Corby.

Second Class—Harry Percival, Mary Freeman, Eliza Ette.

Third Class—Willie Cave, B. Bollard, W. Tassell. About two dozen certificates of merit were given to those who had attended 401 times or more during the previous school year, prizes and certificates were presented to the children by Mrs. Sartoris.
