Memories of J Enos Smith

Private School for Girls’ : Wellingborough Road. Started where Mr Carrington now lives. I had the room built for Mrs J. Enos Smith, my wife. Then she rented the school in Moor Road, where Miss Payne (I think it was) had a school. Mrs Smith had a school for over 20 years, before I married her. She was a pupil of Mrs Brook Samson at Kettering School. Then when Mr Brook Samson was appointed Organist of All Saints Church, Northampton, Mrs Smith went with them to the School House top of Market Square, but it is not a school now, I think, 1929.

Mrs J E Smith had run her kindergarten from her home at 204 Wellingborough Road and moved the school here about 1900, where it continued until her death in 1920.

May and December—To provide dresses for Mr. J. E. Smith’s Company of Maypole Girls a bazaar was held in Mrs. Smith’s School-room, Moor-road, on Friday and Saturday, the function being arranged by Mrs. J. E. Smith, Mrs. E. Swannell, and Mrs. Walter Woodward, Miss Rosa Browning, of Rushden House, who was accompanied by Mrs. Browning, and other members of the family. Mrs. F. Jos. Simpson, and other ladies, opened the bazaar. Miss Browning was introduced by Mrs. Smith, and declared the bazaar open and wished success both to it and the Maypole dancers. On the motion of Mr. J. E. Smith, Miss Browning was thanked for her kindness, as also was Mrs. Browning and the other ladies for their presence.

1920 Mrs Sarah Eleanor Smith (wife of Mr J Enos Smith) - Obituary.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Stanwick, and was married to Mr. Smith at Stanwick Church on June 2nd. 1887. A few years later Mr. Smith had a schoolroom built for Mrs. Smith on the Wellingborough-road, Rushden, and it was there that the well-known Kindergarten school was begun. Mrs. Smith worked up an excellent institution, and afterwards moved to the Kindergarten school, Moor-road, having been Principal for over 20 years. During her illness the school has been conducted by Mrs. Westley, a former pupil.
