H M Inspector's Report

Rushden Echo, Friday July 8, 1898 transcribed Sue Manton

Rushden School Board - More Inspector’s Reports

H.M. Inspector’s reports relating to the Newton Road schools were presented at a meeting of the School Board committee on Tuesday. The reports were:-

Newton Road Mixed School
His school well maintained its high reputation for careful and intelligent instruction and the behaviour of the scholars is exemplary. The Head Teacher’s supervision is thorough and great attention is paid to every detail of school work. the handwriting of the first standard appears to be the weak point which demands increased attention, but the general character of the writing is creditable.

Newton Road Infants School
The children are making fairly creditable progress on the whole, but the premises are very inconvenient and the school is overcrowded and good organisation is difficult; plans however of a new school have been approved and building operations are to commence immediately. The work of the first class is good, but firmer discipline is necessary in the other classes, and irregular answering should be checked. More word building is necessary in reading and writing is uneven. The second class did best in number. Needlework and singing are satisfactory. The school accommodation is at present insufficient for the average attendance. This should be remedied or the grant next year will be endangered. (Article 85(a) of the code) the total grant is £601 0s 3d.
