Denfield Park Junior School

This school was built after detailed consultation with elected Members of Rushden, with Managers and Heads of existing schools in order to meet the need for additional junior places in the area.

One important effect with its opening is that children attending Hayway Infant School will now transfer at 7+  to  this new school.

Location and Future Expansion

The School is designed to serve children from the North West area of the town and some children living immediately to the east of the school. It stands on land, locally known as Eastfields, which formerly belonged to the Denton family who occupied the present Eastfields Home. Hence the name Denfield is part combination of both. The school has spacious playing fields and the mature trees have been retained to enhance the surroundings of the school. The  school opened with 115 children on roll and will gradually increase numerically. The Head Teacher, Mr. B. Whitworth, who was formerly Head Teacher of Broughton County Primary School, took up his post as Head-Designate in April 1977.

Design and Construction of the School

The School, which is a semi-open plan design, is basically two sets of four class bases, each sharing an activity/practical area. Full interaction between the class bases and the activity areas is possible with the provision of sliding folding walls. The link between the two areas is the library/resources centre, with a delightful audio-visunl theatre leading from it.

The school has been constructed in the "method" system, clad in brickwork. The basic design was conceived at an intensive "Collaboration in Design" course held at Nene College in July 1975 and work commenced on site in April 1976.
