The camp, attended by twenty six boys was in charge of Mr. W. I. Jarvis, assisted by Mr. F. Wright of the South End School. The weather was perfect, there were no accidents. One case of illness was successfully treated. The conduct of the lads was exemplary. Great credit reflects upon the two masters and Scout Bugby. I attended daily to supervise canteen and stores.

In the final weeks of the holiday the school underwent drastic structural alterations for use as a Casualty Cleansing Station. On Friday September 1st, while the school staff were busy with the reception and billeting of Child Evacuees from the Metropolitan Area, the school furniture and stock was hurriedly removed by unskilled labour without expert direction, to the Moor Road School, where it was stored. I was called in at 11pm. On Saturday September 2nd I was able to arrange for Mr. A. Morris to supervise the last lorry load of the removal.

After many meetings of Evacuated and Native Head Teachers, permission to re-open all the Rushden Schools, with the exception of Alfred Street Mixed, on Sept 18th was obtained although air raid shelters were not available. During this period I acted as intermediary, between the Education Committee and the committee of the Windmill Club with a view to securing the windmill Hall as a Junior School.

On Thursday 28th September after visits by H.M.I. A. Woodhead and Mr. Birkbeck of the L.C.C., the hall was engaged on a weekly tenancy of £6 per week, plus rates, electricity and sweeping charge, the E.C. sharing the cost of heating, cleaning etc.

Oct 1940

At 10.12am, without warning, two high explosive bombs fell on the premises. The final struck the classroom occupied by Class 10 Standard IIB & IIIB. 46 children on roll – 39 present. Teacher in charge Miss M. Wright. The classroom and the clinic waiting room above were completely wrecked by the explosion which caused the total collapse of the street wall. It is possible that the bomb entered the classroom, falling obliquely through the window and making a deep crater in the farthest corner among the children. All the furniture was smashed, not a desk remaining whole. Except for windows in the demolished wall, all the glass covered with fabric remained unbroken. Twenty five children and the teacher were at once assisted from the classroom and received first aid attention. Fourteen others were rescued by demolition gangs as soon as humanly possible. The serious cases were taken by ambulances to the Moor Road First Aid Post where expert attention was given to the injured. Five children were killed. Four others were moved at once to the Northampton General Hospital, where two died very soon after admission. A further child was sent to the hospital on Saturday October 5th.

The second bomb which fell in the Boys’ Playground, badly damaged a the boys’ offices, blew down a large part of the playground wall and damaged, though not severely, one shelter. It is my opinion that had the children been in the shelter the casualties would have been less severe.

A roll call was prevented by the false report of a time bomb in the playground, all the children not receiving first aid were at once dismissed. The children and staff showed great courage and remained quite calm carrying out all the precautions arranged for such an emergency.

Parents and friends who invaded the premises on the whole behaved well, but there were cases of bad hysteria among them. Mr. J.H. Holland B.A. Secretary and Mr. A. Woodhead H.M.I. were quickly on the scene.

I must record m admiration of the first aid and demolition workers for their promptitude and efficiency.

The school was closed until pronounced safe by the County Architect, Mr. J. Perkins.

On Thursday afternoon Miss Bennett and Miss O’Connor visited all the injured bringing back a complete report, every child being accounted for. A preliminary check had been made by volunteers from the crowd. Visits were also paid on Friday. In the afternoon Mr. Orrin, the visiting Colchester Headmaster, with Miss Swann and Miss Hill of the feeding Infants’ Schools assisted me in the work of identifying the victims. Members of the staff with myself attended the funerals on Saturday of Dennis Felce, Donald Scriven of Alfred Street and Muriel Maye of Colchester and on Monday of Joyce Dodd, Roy Odell of Alfred Street. Lorna Paine and Patricia Chase were taken to Colchester for burial.

(Note made 3rd October 2000. It came to light today following a memorial ceremony that it was not Patricia Chase who died but her sister Cecelia Chase. Patricia Chase visited the school today. J. Kidney (Headmaster))
