Jan 1929

 

7th

School re-opened after the Christmas Holidays. Staff all present. No. of children present 404. No on the roll 434. Five children were admitted from the Alfred Street Infants Department and five from the Moor Road Infant School. During the holidays 16 children left school to commence work 8 boys and 8 girls. The stock for the session arrived during the day.

10th

Mr. J.L. Holland sec. Northants L.E.A. and Mr. Lewin, surveyor, visited the school in the afternoon session. A cycle shed was recommended to be erected.

14th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school today.

15th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school in the morning session. Mr. J. Ferris attendance officer called at the school during the afternoon session.

18th

The weather has been severe with several snowstorms, the weather has suffered in consequence. Many children are absent suffering from chills they have contracted. The attendance has dropped steadily from 406 to 359 per session during the past fortnight. No. of children on roll = 434, average attendance for the week = 376.7, percentage attendance = 86.7

21st

A meeting of Rushden Head Teachers was held here after school to formulate plans for assisting the miners’ children by the pupils attending the Rushden Schools. It was ascertained that the collection of money from the school children was against the regulations of the L.E.A. therefore it was decided to organise a collection of children’s discarded clothing.

22nd

Messrs. F. Corby and B. Vorley paid a visit to the school and inspected the premises with a view to ascertaining what repairs were to be suggested to be dealt with by the L.E.A.

25th

The attendance has continued to decrease owing to the increase in sickness due to bad colds and influenza. Average attendance 374.9 Percentage 86.3

30th

Mrs. Levy absent from school duties owing to illness. Her class is being taught by the Head Teacher.

31st

Mr. J. Ferris paid a visit to the school re attendance.

Feb 1929

 

1st

A further decrease in attendance has occurred this week. Average attendance 364.2 percentage 84.3

4th

Mrs. Levy returned to duty today.

5th

Mr. Ferris visited the school during the afternoon session.

6th

Completed and despatched the order for gardening, seeds etc.

11th

A visit of extreme cold has seriously affected the attendance of the children. Mr. Ferris, the attendance officer, visited the school and looked up several children who were absent without a satisfactory reason.

14th

Mr. Corby, chairman of the school managers, visited the school during the morning session. Mr. Ferris called again today and brought the Annual Report Forms for the staff.

15th

The severe cold reported on the 11th has continued all the week, the River Nene being frozen, the first occasion I can remember in my twenty years experience here of skating taking place on the river. The attendance has in consequence been seriously affected. Average attendance 360.1 no. on roll 432. percentage attendance 83.3

19th

Mr. C. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school re attendance.

22nd

The severe weather has continued throughout the week but there are now indications of a thaw taking place. The attendance on consequence was only slightly better than the last week.

Average attendance 371.2 no. on roll 431, percentage attendance 86.1

25th

After a weekend thaw the frost has returned and the attendance remains at a low level.

26th

A fall of snow has further affected the school attendance today.

Mr. Vorley paid a short visit to the school today.

28th

Mr. Ferris visited the school during the morning session.

Mar 1929

 

1st

Routine medical inspection of the children aged 8 and 12 commenced this morning. During the week the examination of oral reading and recitation has been taken whenever possible. The attendance was lower than the preceding week owing to the inclement weather. Average attendance 366.2 no. on roll = 431 percentage attendance 84.9

4th

Miss N.L. Groome absent from school duty owing to illness. The school doctor resumed routine inspection.

7th

Mr. Ferris visited the school in the afternoon.

8th

Mr. Corby visited the school and signed a requisition for a new lavatory basin in the teachers’ room. Mr. Vorley paid a visit to the school during the afternoon session. The school doctor continued the routine inspection. The attendance during the past week shows a slight improvement. Average attendance 384.6 no. on roll = 431 percentage attendance 89.2

11th

Miss Groome resumed school duties this morning. The whole school was given a test in dictation, hand writing and composition today.

12th

Mr. Huke absent from school duties today owing to an attack of influenza. The school doctor and nurse attended here again today to continue the routine medical inspection of the children aged 8 & 12. Mr. Ferris paid a visit to the school in the afternoon.

13th

The annual schools examination took place today. The Head Teacher of this school and Miss N.L. Groom conducted the examination at the Rushden Newton Road School. Mr. S. Saddler of Newton Rod School took charge of the examination here. He was assisted by Miss Watson. 50 children were entered for the examination 28 girls and 22 boys. There were four girls absent from the examination. Miss Winifred Berry commenced duty today here. She is supplying in Mr. Huke’s place.

14th

School gardening on the plots was commenced in earnest today. The hard winter has brought about a late start in the preparations and in consequence the planting season will be later than usual. The very severe frosts have completely devastated the winter onion bed and the spring cabbage and winter lettuce planting. This is the first time such a thing has happened during my tenure of the school garden.

15th

The School Medical Officer, Dr. Newton, the school nurse attended here today to continue the routine medical inspection of the school children. This completes the medical inspection so far as the time allotted by the L.E.A allows. There are however five or six children left who should have been examined. The attendance this week has improved, the percentage attendance being 90.4

18th

During the week-end Mr. Charles Cross a member of the District Schools sub-committee died suddenly. Mr. Fred Corby, chairman of the school managers visited the school.

19th

The Head Teacher attended the funeral service of Mr. Charles Cross at the beginning of the afternoon session. Mr. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school this afternoon. Also Messrs E. Freeman and E. Sugars, school managers, paid a visit to the school. Mr. S. Panter called to see the head teacher.

21st

Examined the school in arithmetic today.

25th

Mr. Huke resumed school duties this morning. Miss Winifred Berry therefore terminated her supply duty as from Friday last 22nd March. Mr. J.C. Millican H.M.I. paid a visit of inspection today.

26th

Mr. Millican continued his inspection during the morning session. Mr. Corby , chairman of the school managers and Mr. J. Ferris visited the school in the afternoon.

27th

Mr. Millican again inspected the school during the morning session. Completed Form ix and forwarded to L.E.A. Office Northampton. Total attendances 164096, times open 414. Average attendance 396

School closed at 4.30pm for the Easter Holidays Wed 27th March to April 8th.

Apr 1929

 

8th

School re-opened after the Easter Holidays. Staff all present. No. of children on roll = 411. No. of children present = 394

Since the last day of meeting 16 children have left school to continue work and 5 for other reasons.

9th

Mr. John Ferris S.A.O. visited the school in the afternoon.

16th

Mr. Fred Corby visited the school during the morning session. Mr. E.L. Brightwell absent from school in the afternoon attending the funeral of his wife’s father.

18th

School closed today, the children being given a holiday on the first anniversary of the death of Dr. Hulbert, late school medical officer. This was in accordance with the expressed wish in his “will”. Dr. Hulbert left a sum of money to the Education Committee for the relief of children who could not afford the treatment recommended during the school medical examination.

22nd

Mr. B. Vorley and Mr. Arthur Allebone, school managers, paid a visit to the school in the afternoon.

23rd

St. George’s Day. No celebration is taking place here this time. Mr. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school and visited a number of the children’s homes whose members were absent from school.

25th

Mr. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school today.

26th

Mr. L.E.A. Prothero, chief attendance officer visited the school during the afternoon session.

30th

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today re-attendance. Workmen commenced to repair the playgrounds today. The holes in the asphalt made playing in the playground very dangerous. Hence the resolve to make it safe without waiting for the Whitsuntide holiday to relieve the workmen of the difficulty of the children’s presence.

May 1929

The school attendance this week has been poor for the time  of the year. Average attendance 372 no. on roll 412.

10th

Mr. F. Corby chairman of the school managers and Mr. J. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school during the afternoon session.

13th

The school was closed today on account of the premises being used in connection with the bye election of the  County Council for a number of polling stations.

14th

School re-opened today after the closure of the County Council Election. Posted the English Scripts to the County Education Offices. Mr. B. Vorley visited the school in the afternoon session.

16th

Mr. S. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school today.

17th

Empire Day was celebrated in school today in the manner which has been customary for several years. School closed at the end of the morning session for the Whitsuntide Holidays Friday 17th May to Monday 27th May.

27th

School re-opened today Monday 27th May after the Whitsuntide Holidays. Staff all present. No. of children present 395 number on roll =412

Mr. Ferris visited the school today.

6th

Mr. L.E.A. Prothero visited the school in the afternoon session. Mr. Fred Corby, chairman of the school managers and Mr. J. Ferris held a conference with the Head Teacher on the suggested alteration of the staffing of the school.

11th

Mr. W.E. Capon of the school management committee visited the school and brought the new Challenge Shield he is presenting to the School Sports Association. Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today.

13th

School closed today for the annual sports of the Rushden and District Schools Sports Association.

18th

Mr. Ferris visited the school today. Mr. F. Green, vice chairman of the school managers visited the school in the afternoon session.

25th

Mr.E. Freeman visited the school today also Mr. Ferris.

28th

Throughout the week the Head Teacher has engaged examining classes 5,6 7, 8 & 9 in history, Geography, Nature Study, Recitation and Oral Reading.

Mr. Ferris visited the school re attendance.

5th

Examined the whole school in written work: composition, dictation and handwriting.

8th

Mr. Corby visited the school to confer with the Head Teacher on the grading of the school.

9th

Mr. Ferris visited the school.

10th

Mr. F. Thorpe of Wellingborough Technical Institute visited the school in connection with the science teaching. On the previous evening the Head Teacher met the school managers to discuss the question of the demarcation of the school district.

11th

Prepared a return of all the children in the school, classified according to the streets  in which they live.

16th

Messrs. Corby and Claridge visited the school during the morning session and Messrs. Freeman and Sugars visited the school in the afternoon session.

17th

The school was closed today for the united Sunday Schools’ Treat.

18th

School re-opened after the Sunday Schools’ Treat. The New School Time-table, having been confirmed by the L.E.A. and H.M. Inspector, it has been written on the Standard Time-table form and placed in the frame for the guidance of the teachers and all whom it may concern.

Miss Clayton today received notice that it has been decided to appoint a certificated teacher in her place. The opportunity of finding an appointment will be given her, before she is asked to tender her resignation.

23rd

Mr. Ferris visited the school during the day. Mr. J.C. Millican called at the school in the afternoon session to report on Miss C. Croft who has completed her probationary year.

24th

Mr. G. Rippiner and his assistant Mr. Grant visited the school today. A first aid case was today delivered here. This should prove a great service to the school welfare.

30th

Mr. A. Allebone, chairman of the County elementary Education Sub Committee, paid a visit to the school and stayed the afternoon session. He interviewed the teachers and made a tour of the school. Mr. L.E.A. Prothero and Mr. Ferris visited the school I connection with the organisation after the holidays.

Aug 1929

 

1st

School closed at the end of the afternoon session for the midsummer Vacation. Thurs August 1st to Monday September 2nd 1929. There 18 girls and 14 boys leaving to attend a secondary school. 10 girls and 13 boys being transferred to the Intermediate school.

Sept 1929

 

2nd

School re-opened after the Midsummer vacation. The staff were all present at the re-opening. During the holidays 69 children left this school, 32 to commence work and 37 to attend other schools. As 60 children were admitted from the Infants Departments, 23 from Alfred Street Infants and 46 from the Moor Road Infants School, there are the same number of children on roll as before the holidays, namely 415. No present when school opened 402.

The stock for the present term arrived during the morning session.

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school re-attendance in the afternoon.

10th

Mr. H.R. Sweeting H.M.I. visited the school in the morning session and investigated the number of children attending the school and the organisation and accommodation of these children.

11th

Mr. T.C. Archer, an official lecturer of the League of Nations union, addressed the senior school in the Hall on the work of the League of Nations. Mr. B. Vorley was present at the commencement of the address.

12th

This evening was inaugurated a Schools Swimming Competition. The Alfred Street School team was successful in winning the Challenge Shield. Denis Brown, Herbert Albon, Ernest Wilby & Arthur Keys formed the Alfred Street Team. Dennis Brown won the medal for the Champion School Boys swimmer and Herbert Albon secured the second place. Maisie Worrall was third in the girls’ race.

17th

Mr. W.E. Capon, school manager, visited the school during the afternoon session. Mr. James Ferris also visited the school.

20th

Bernard T.W. Langdon commenced duties here as a Pupil Teacher today. He is attending Mondays and Fridays during the term. School closed at the end of the afternoon session until Tuesday morning for the Rushden Feast Holiday.

24th

School re-opened this morning , Tuesday 24th September after the Feast Holiday – attendance 398 no on roll 416.

Oct 1929

 

1st

Mr. James Ferris visited the school today re-attendance.

18th

The Head teacher was absent today attending the Regional Conference at Buxton, of the War Savings Committee.

21st

Mr. A.L. Austin C.C. member of the County L.E.A. visited the school in the afternoon session, and conferred with the Head Teacher upon an agreed syllabus of Religious Instruction for the schools of Northamptonshire. Mr. Austin also inspected the work in several classes.

22nd

Mr. J. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school today.

25th

Mr. B. Vorley member of the school managers called to see the headmaster in the afternoon session.

28th

Mr. H.R. Sweeting H.M.I. visited the school and spent the day inspecting the work of the Senior School.

29th

Miss Croft returned to duty this morning, but is looking very ill yet.

31st

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today.

Nov 1929

 

1st

School closed today for the Mid-term Holiday. Friday 1st November and Monday 4th November.

5th

School re-opened today after the mid-term holiday. Mr. Ferris visited the school in the afternoon session.

8th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school in the afternoon session. A conference of the Head Teachers of Rushden and Higham Ferrers took place after school. Mr. Holland and Mr. Birkbeck attended and place the re-organisation proposals for the district before the conference for suggestions and possible amendments.

11th

Today being Armistice Day the Head Teacher assembled the children in the Hall for the united observance of the two minutes silence. Before the eleven o’clock signal an address was given emphasising the importance of the celebration.

Mr. C.F. Lawrence, horticultural superintendent visited the school and talked over the school gardening work with the Head Teacher.

12th

The Head Teacher whilst giving a Science Lecture to the senior girls on “Oxygen” had his left hand very seriously injured by the spontaneous combustion of a small piece of phosphorus which he was going to burn in a jar of oxygen.

14th

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today.

15th

The attendance this week has been much lower than the last weeks. It is due to an increase of autumnal sickness consequent upon the change of weather.

19th

Mr. Fred Corby, Mr. Chas. Claridge & Mr. W.E. Capon school managers visited the school during the afternoon session.

22nd

The attendance this week has again suffered a decrease. No of children on roll = 423.

25th

Gave the whole school a test in dictation, composition and handwriting.

28th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school today. Also Mr. Ferris who brought the application forms for the post of Certified Assistant Teacher.

29th

Miss Edith Clayton ceased duties here this afternoon as an uncertified assistant teacher. She has secured a post at the Rothwell C.E. School.

Dec 1929

 

2nd

Miss Winifred Berry commenced duties here today and took the class vacated by Miss Clayton.

4th

Forwarded forms S.M. 9 for Miss Clayton to Education Offices, Northampton. Mr. Ferris visited the school today.

5th

Mr. Perkins. Assistant County Education Surveyor visited the school and inspected the fastenings of the window ventilators with a view to making them efficient.

10th

Mr. Ferris visited the school today. Mr. Fred Corby and Mr. Armstrong (electrician) inspected the light in the hall and made recommendations for its improvement.

11th

An unfortunate accident happened to a scholar named Wilfred Bester before school this afternoon. About a quarter to two he was standing by the door in the playground leading into the alley behind the school when the wind blew the door and in closing it caught the boy’s thumb and severed the end of it. He was treated by the school nurse who recommended him to be taken to the doctor. Dr. Murissett treated him and afterwards took him home. The accident was not witnessed by anyone though when the door banged Harold Jeffries was on the point of passing through.

16th

Stock for the spring term arrived today. Bernard Langton P.T. resumed school duties today the Oxford Local Examination being over.

17th

Mr. F. Corby, chairman of the managers and Mr. Ferris visited the school today.

18th

The annual Christmas Concert was held in the evening. A large attendance of parents and old scholars were present. Messrs. B. Vorley and C. Claridge represented the school managers. The first half of the programme consisted of Carols, Morris Dancing, Folk Dancing, A Sketch by Enid Bennett and a musical representation of A.A> Milne’s “The King’s Breakfast” from Miss Bennett’s Class. The second part of the programme was a Cantata entitled “Santa Claus and his Comrades”. The principal characters were selected from the Junior children with the exception of Father Christmas which was taken by Frank Bennett. The Senior girls formed a very valuable aid as “Chorus”. After the conclusion of the programme Mr. Vorley proposed a vote of thanks to al the performers, their teachers and the parents who had presented their children so daintily. This was seconded by Mr. Claridge and carried with enthusiasm. The Head Master in responding mentioned his indebtedness to Miss Groome, Mrs. Levy and Miss Bennett for preparing the children.

19th

After the first lesson in the afternoon the whole school was assembled in the Hall and the concert given the previous evening was repeated. The children followed the various items of the programme with keen interest and their attention was very well maintained. After the concert the Head Teacher addressed the children and presented the prizes to the Winner of the Essays in connection with Health Week. Thurza Hodgkins won the senior prize and Margaret Tye the junior prize. The children were given gifts of books and educational toys. After prayer and the singing of the National Anthem the school was dismissed for the Christmas Vacation 19th December 1929 to 6th January 1930. The Head teacher bade farewell to the 9 girls and r boys of the Senior School who are leaving to commence life in the work-a-day world.

Jan 1930

 

6th

School re-opened after the Christmas Vacation. Staff all present. No. of children present 396 no on roll 420. There were 7 new admissions, 3 from the Infants’ Department 2 from Irthlingborough, 1 from Raunds and 1 from Birmingham. In addition 7 girls taking part in the pantomime “Little Red Riding Hood” at the Palace were admitted for the period Monday to Wednesday of this week.

7th

Mr. Ferris visited the school.

8th

The School Dentist Mr. Godfrey examined the teeth of the older children during the morning and afternoon session. There were 199 names on the schedules and of these 20 were absent making a total of 179 examined. In the afternoon a matinee performance of the pantomime “Little Red Riding Hood” considerably affected the attendance. There were 122 more children absent in the afternoon than in the morning.

Mr. Ferris visited the school.

10th

The Electric Light fittings in the Hall were substantially lowered (2 ft) and the bulbs and globes attended to. Mr. Vorley, chairman of the managers visited the school and inspected the alterations made in the lighting of the Hall. He expressed himself as satisfied with the changes made. Mr. B. Vorley visited the school during the afternoon session.

14th

Completed and forwarded to county Education Offices, Northampton the annual schools’ examination schedule. There are 57 children eligible by reason of age to take the examination. Of these 47 have been entered for the examination.

17th

Average attendance for the week = 382.9 no on roll = 412.

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school today.

28th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school today. A meeting in the large hall has been arranged by the British Social Hygiene Council to take place tonight. The meeting has been called by Dr. Greenfield, chairman of the Rushden Urban District Council at the request of Dr. Grieg, the county Medical Officer. No-one seems to be responsible for the seating accommodation of the conference representatives and as the Head Teacher was afraid of a serious obstacle preventing the success of the meeting he had to procure chairs which on this occasion was extremely difficult as every organisation required their chairs. Thanks to Mr. W.E. Capon, a school manger, a number of folding chairs was obtained from the Works Athletic Ground.

29th

The seed potatoes arrived from Northampton today. They have been set up on boxes by the gardening boys. Arriving this early they will have plenty of time to develop good “sprouts”

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today.

31st

Miss Winifred Berry who has been doing temporary duty here since 2nd December ceased duties at the end of the afternoon session.

Feb 1930

 

3rd

Miss Phyllis N. Godfrey commenced duties here today as a Certified Assistant Teacher. During the greater part of the afternoon a pall of darkness overhung the neighbourhood and at one period it became as dark as at night time. The rainstorm which was thus ushered in was by no means severe. This was very surprising.

Ronnie Parks, a boy in the senior school, was caught robbing the till of a shop in Moor Road on Saturday night. This is the third occasion on which he has been found acting dishonestly of late, and the question is causing considerable anxiety to the Head Teacher. The difficulty is to decide upon the best policy to pursue, both as regards the boy and his family.

Mr. Ferris S.A.E. visited the school today. Messrs E. Freeman & E. Sugars school managers made a tour of inspection round the school.

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school in the afternoon.

Mr. F. J. Thorpe, principal Wellingborough Technical School, visited this school in the afternoon.

13th

Mr. Ferris S.A.E visited the school in the afternoon.

18th

Mr. Ferris S.A.E. visited the school today.

19th

Mr. H.R. Sweeting H.M.I. ,who was inspecting the Infants Dept, called to see the Head teacher for a short time in the afternoon session.

21st

There is a considerable illness among the children and for the first time since the Christmas Holidays the attendance dropped below 90% (Percentage Attendance = 89.5)

25th

The School Dentist examined the teeth of the children of the lower school today, when over 200 children were submitted.

26th

Mr. B. Morris, headmaster of the South End School, reported very ill. Called to see him during the morning and found him so seriously ill that his recovery is a matter of conjecture.

Visited school, checked registers, classes all merry and bright.

Mar 1930

 

4th

Mr. J. Ferris, S.A.O. visited the school. Commenced examining the oral work of the various lasses in the school.

10th

It is to be satisfactorily reported that Mr. B.M. Jones is making a recovery from his severe illness.

12th

The Annual School’s Examination took place today. The children of this school used the Hall as the Centre Exam and Mr. Saddler of Rushden Newton Road School was the presiding officer. 43 children took the examination there being 4 absentees. The Head Teacher and Mr. C.J. Huke were invigilators at the Rushden Newton Road School Centre.

Mr. G. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school today.

14th

The attendance for the week ending 14th March has been considerably affected by the epidemic of measles in the Infant Dept., the older children being ordered to stay away by the doctor when a young member of the family is affected. Average attendance 361 no on roll 410 percentage attendance 88%

Mr. Ferris visited the school today.

21st

Mr. W.E. Capon, school manager, paid a visit to the school this morning and made a present of a number of books published in connection with the forthcoming Trade Exhibition at Northampton during the month of May. The books deal with the lives of Washington and Franklin and their interesting connection with Northamptonshire, and should prove of educational value to the senior children.

24th

The whole school was given, a test today in Dictation, handwriting and composition. Mr. F. Corby called to see the Head Teacher in the afternoon.

Mr. J. Ferris visited the school today.

Dr. Macintosh, the County Medical Officer of Health, paid a visit of inspection to the schools and discussed questions of hygiene importance with the head teacher.

Completed Medical Card M.I.3 received yesterday and forwarded to Education Officer Northampton. There re 80 girls, 70 boys and 10 special cases for the medical inspection of which the date will be answered later.

Mr. E. Sayer an old pupil of this school called to thank the Head Teacher for having found him an opening as a journalist. He is leaving for the Bermudas to take up a post as Parliamentary Reporter for the chief paper published there.

Scholarship result:-Received notice this morning that Phyllida Knight, Joyce Berrill, Marjorie Austin and Dennis Austin have won County Scholarships. Marjorie and Dennis Austin are not related. Joyce Berrill is the grand-daughter of the late Mr. W. Wood who was head teacher of this school for more than 27 years. Phyllida Knight is the daughter of a former leader of this school (Infant Dept) and granddaughter of the late Mr. James Thomas Colson for many years, Chairman of the Managers of this school. Mr. B. Vorley school manager visited the school in the afternoon.

Unable to complete Requisition for the ensuing term because the booklet list submitted to the County Sec. Northampton has not yet been returned.

School closed today for the Rushden & District Schools’ Sports Associations Annual Sports.

Dr. Newton visited the school today and conducted the routine medical inspection of the children in the scheduled age groups. The medical inspection is being continued on 24th June, 1st July, 4th July and 8th July, these breaks prolonging the medical inspection interfering with the smooth working of the school routine.

Gave an extra gardening lesson this morning as two weeks have been missed; one owing to the Whitsuntide Holiday and one to the Sports Days. This enabled cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts plants to be planted out.

Routine Medical Inspection of children by Dr. Newton continued today.

Mr. F.J. Thorpe, principal Wellingborough Technical School visited the school during the afternoon session.

1st

Routine Medical Inspection by Dr. Newton continued today. Mr. Huke absent ill in the afternoon.

3rd

Sheila Butlin and Harry Martin received notice this morning that they had been granted free places at the Secondary Schools in Wellingborough. The Promotion list has come to hand and the number of children who received the 45% marks or over number 18. There were 43 children who sat for the examination and the result is disappointing. A strange thing is that some children failed to gain the promotion mark are in class far more superior to many on the promotion list. This is a characteristic which deserves notice because of the educational import.

Routine Medical Inspection of children continued today.

7th

Gave the whole of the classes in the school a written test in dictation, composition and handwriting.

8th

Dr. Newton completed her Routine Medical Inspection during the morning session. This inspection commenced on the 20th June so that it has been about for almost three weeks. Mr. Ferris S.A.O. visited the school in the afternoon.

9th

Margaret Tye received notice of the grant of a free place at the Northampton High School. This makes the seventh pupil to be awarded a Secondary School Education this year.

11th

Mr. B. Vorley visited the school in the afternoon.

15th

Margaret Tye has accepted a Governors’ Scholarship at the Northampton High School. Margaret Tye was also called up for oral exam in respect of a free place at the County High School Wellingborough but has declined in view of the precious award. John Throssell was likewise called up in respect of a free place at the Wellingborough New Grammar School but unfortunately his parents refuse to keep him at school the required time.

School closed today for the United Sunday Schools’ Treat.

School re-opened today after the holiday for the United Sunday Schools’ Treat.

There are 17 children leaving school to commence work today; 9 girls and 8 boys. Seven children are leaving to continue their education in Secondary Schools; 5 girls and 2 boys.

There are also 22 children being transferred to the Rushden Intermediate School; 10 girls and 12 boys. School closed at the end of the afternoon session for the Midsummer Vacation. Thursday 31st July to Monday 1st September.

Enid Evans is again playing truant this afternoon. In spite of all the attentions given to her she is quite incorrigible. The attendance today continues to be satisfactory. Percentage attendance 93.9 Average attendance 407

Two children from Sanders Lodge presented themselves for admission to this school this morning. Though the school was quite full these children had to be taken in as they now travel a long distance and the additional journey to South End School would have constituted a considerable hardship to them.

Mr. B. Vorley, the oldest school manager in service, died at 3pm on Saturday 11th October very suddenly. The school will miss him as a frequent visitor who took a keen interest in the children and teachers.

The Head Teacher absent part of the afternoon attending the funeral obsequies of the late Mr. Benjamin Vorley.

The Gardening Club was taken to the County Fruit Show in the Windmill Club Hall where Mr. H.J. Wyles gave an interesting talk upon Fruit Selection and Fruit Packing.

Mr. Perkins And Mr. Lovell from the Surveyor’s Dept. paid a visit of inspection into the heating arrangements with a view to improving the temperature in the classrooms on the Alfred Street from of the school.

Mr. Lenton, heating engineer, & Messrs Perkins and Lovell visited the school re- altering the heating arrangements as mentioned above.

School re-opened after the half term holiday. Miss Kathleen Dora Luck commenced duties here as a temporary teacher during the continued absence of Mrs. Levy.

Mr. Ferris visited the school re-attendance.

7th

There has been a sudden fall in attendance immediately following the half term holiday. This is the more noticeable in as much as the percentage attendance previous to half term was 96%. Percentage attendance for week ending 7th November =91.5

Miss K. Such ceased duties here today.

17th

Mrs. A. Ground of Irchester began temporary duty here today with Mrs. Levy’s class.

18th

Mr. Ferris called at school today re-attendance. Messrs. E. Freeman and E. Sugars and Mr. Waisley visited the school today. Enid Evans, after school, was found to have concealed in her right shoe a florin which she had taken from the desk of Miss Groome her teacher.

19th

Mr. F. Corby visited the school today and discussed the course to be taken in regard to the girl Enid Evans.

20th

Mr. Ferris visited the school today. He visited the Chairman of the School Managers, Mr. F. Green, who agreed that the girl, Enid Evans, should be taken to court.

25th

Messrs. Green, chairman, & F. Corby and L. Baxter, school managers, inspected the school premises with the Head Teacher to ascertain what repairs and renovations to recommend the L.E.A. to undertake during the current year. Messrs. Perkins and Lovell, assistant school surveyors, inspected the new boiler erected and made plans for the position of the second new boiler to be added during the Christmas Holidays.

26th

Mr. Abbott, physical culture instructor visited the school in order to plan with the head teacher the arrangements for using the town ground as a recreation ground for the council schools.

Two days ago, 24th Nov, the whole school was examined in dictation, handwriting and Composition.

28th

The girl, Enid Evans, at the Wellingborough Children’s Court was bound over for 2 years to be on her best behaviour. She commenced being absent on the Friday afternoon, there being no satisfactory reason why she should do so. Mr. W.E. Colson, school manager, visited the school during the morning session.

Mr. Ferris visited the school today re attendance. Mr. W.E. Colson visited the school.

8th

Examined the whole school in arithmetic. Mc. Macintosh, the County Medical Officer, visited the school in the afternoon to make enquiries about the effectiveness of Dusmo in treating the floors.

9th

Miss Groome, absent from school duty today owing to illness. Mr. Ferris called in the afternoon.

10th

Miss Groome resumed duty today.

15th

The Sanitary Authority disinfected Room 8 owing to a case of diphtheria having occurred to a scholar named Roy Ingram. Mr. W.E. Capon visited the school and brought a selection of calendars.

17th

The Annual Christmas Concert was held in the Hall of the School at 6.30pm. The attendance was not so good as usual. Mr. W.E. Capon represented the School Managers. A very varied programme had been arranged including Carols, Folk Dancers, Recitations, Monologues, a sketch entitled “Noughts & Crosses” by Miss Bennett’s class and “The Mad Hatters Tea Party” by Miss Godfrey’s class. After the conclusion of the programme Mr. W.E. Capon proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, their teachers and the parents of the children. The Head Teacher in responding expressed his indebtedness to Miss Groome, Miss Godfrey and Miss Bennett for training the children and Mr. Capon for presiding.

18th

After the first lesson in the afternoon the whole school was assembled in the Hall and the programme of the previous evening was repeated. The children were keenly interested in the various items. After the concert the Head Teacher addressed the children. Prizes presented by Miss Croft to children in her class were given to the successful scholars. The children were given a gift of books and educational toys etc. After prayers and Christmas and New Year greetings the children were dismissed for the Christmas Holidays Thursday 18th December to Monday 5th Jan 1931. The Headmaster bid farewell to 5 girls and 7 boys who were leaving to commence work.
