Mr. Mantle has had an intimation from the County council that as Miss Caudwell has successfully passed her Certificate Examination, she may stay at this school at a salary of £60 per year until the County Council find her another appointment. Miss Connie Scholes whose apprenticeship ended in June is to be recognised as Art. 50 in her place. The change is made because, owing to the successes of the two teachers concerned (at scholarship and Certificate) the staff of this department is greater than is allowed by the County Council. The school is to be closed on Monday and Tuesday next week, the 24th and 25th for Rushden Feast.

This morning 32 girls from Standard III accompanied by Miss Adams and Miss Stringer left school at 10.45am to walk to Irchester & Wymington to examine buds and twigs. Standard 7 girls in charge of Miss Childs left school at 2.45pm to walk along the Bedford Road to Newton. These girls have attended so well lately making 100% for 8 weeks that the walk was given as a reward. Buds, twigs and frog-spawn were under consideration. Attendance for the week has fallen a little the average being 296.1 out of 315 and the percentage 94.

Miss Mathews took half of her class Standard V for a walk starting at 3.20pm. the girls are specially studying and observing the various kinds of twigs. Miss Morris also accompanied the class

The second section of Standard III took a walk this morning by the spinneys along Irchester Road and this afternoon the second section of Standard I walked in the field off Wellingborough Road. The girls gathered some nice specimens and made notes, sketches thereon in their exercise books.

The classes are now working from the syllabuses for the next higher class. The children have not been promoted from North End School as the new mixed department will be opened shortly. All names have been written on the 5th quarter registers and will be marked in that place for a time until we know which children are to be transferred to the new school then the names of scholars who remain in attendance here will be written on the new registers and total attendances made during May brought forward. Till the opening of the new school the children will remain in their present classes under the present teacher of the class but will work from a syllabus for the class higher.

“The girls are being carefully taught. The order is very good and the teachers work hard. Written exercises are well done throughout the school and drawing, physical exercises, music and handwriting deserve praise. While the girls read well their powers of oral expression are rather limited, attention will no doubt be given to this matter. The defects in the premises previously reported on still exist.

I have not been able to take the usual term examinations as Standard V has been in my charge since Whitsuntide. The teachers have however set their own tests in reading arithmetic, composition, & dictation. I shall examine the oral work in September.
