There has been a change of teachers during the year and the mistress did not find the work in a very advanced state. Firmer discipline is needed in the First Standard, the second standard is very weak in spelling and arithmetic and the teaching might be more sympathetic. In the third standard and upwards, the children are very bright and well behaved and take great interest in their work. They read and write well and the poetry was well recited. Copy books are neatly written. A good knowledge was shewn of English Grammar and Needlework was well taught. Penelope canvas should not be used for marking.

The presentation in cookery of the scholars numbered 236 and 256 on the Girls’ School examination schedule have been disallowed because such scholars were not presented for examination in elementary subjects. C. Clarke and L. Sargent have passed fairly, but Clarke should attend to Geography, History and Music (Theory) and Sargent to Geography and History.

S.G. Smith failed.

Miss Wright assistant, still absent. I have examined Standard IV this week and find the work very disappointing. I have arranged for this Standard to have their arithmetic lessons and dictation in the large room so as to be under by own superintendence.

I have obtained very good specimens of Linen and Lead Pencil manufacture which we find most useful in domestic and object lessons. The specimens of butterflies have been fitted up this week. The board kindly consented to cases being made for the same.

12th

Mr. Varnon H.M.I. visited evening school for a few minutes, as he was on his way to Boys’ Department. Mr. Varnon commented on the improvement in the appearance and brightness of the school.

I have now examined all Standards in each subject. The work of Standard I and II has greatly improved. Dictation in Standard III is weak also Arithmetic in Standard V. the evening school Cookery classes were completed on Friday February 9th. I have been obliged to make several alterations in the timetable in order that I may take the weak subjects of Standard IV & V myself. This is very hard work as I have Standard VI & VII under my charge entirely.

The Evening School closed today. 29 girls completed their Cookery Attendances. Six girls in the 2nd class and 4 in the first gained prizes for regular attendances. C. 13th

The work of Standard IV is not very satisfactory. The new teacher is not accustomed to the work consequently I am obliged to superintend nearly all their lessons. As I have Standard VI also for Domestic I find the work very arduous. The Pupil Teachers exam took place on Saturday April 14th.

I have supplied skipping ropes for the use of the girls in all the Standards. These are only used in recreation times of after school in the playground.

24th

I have made a little alteration in the working of Standard III & IV timetable. The girls have half an hour each day for needlework instead of the hour. The remaining half hour is devoted to spelling as they are so weak in that subject. Instead of singing in Standard V & CI this morning I took an arithmetic lesson from the LSD

There are several families away from school owing to measles or fever.

Standard II, III & IV Arithmetic was done very well indeed today. Standard VI work very satisfactory. I examined in Domestic Economy Friday. Most of the papers were very sensibly written. Many of the half timers in Standard V & VI have been withdrawn from the domestic class as their Elementary subjects were needing extra attention.

30th

Visit paid by chairman. School year ends today. Edith Newcombe in Standard VI has left school to learn dressmaking, as she is over 14 years of age.

25th

The average for the past week is 248.number on books 343. I have moved Miss Chandler from Standard IV to Standard III. The class contains 55 girls but these are more than she can manage properly as she is not accustomed to the work of a large girls’ school

Jun 1894

1st

Work has provided according to the time table during the past week. I have taken Standards III for grammar and writing and Standard VI & VII for all lessons except reading and grammar occasionally.

Louis Sargent gave a criticism lesson on “Sugar” to standard I. the lesson was very well given, but there were not sufficient illustrations and specimens. The new blotting pads in use now are a great help when the girls are writing on foolscap. The average for the week is 248.

4th

Have this day examined registers and found same correct. C.L. Bradfield.

4th

Visit paid by Messrs Knight and Bradfield.

5th

Mr. Mayes visiting officer came to report this morning that the Board had given permission to girls who had passed Standard V to leave school even though they were not 13 years of age.

7th

Work has proceeded as well as possible this week considering the crowded state of the rooms. Carrie Clark gave a criticism lesson to Standard V,VI & VII on “the Ancient Britons”. The Pupil teachers and myself criticised. The lesson was very fairly done. The P.T’s. remain behind after school. On Thursday Evenings to received instructions in school management.

8th

Mr. Bradfield visited school this morning with Mr. Knight. Average for past week 248.3

18th

School was closed this afternoon on account of the Succoth and Wesleyan Treat.

22nd

I have examined throughout the school during this week in every subject. Standard III work was very poorly done, owing chiefly to carelessness. On account of this I have been obliged to divide the class and give the division to C. Clarke, as Miss Chandler cannot manage by herself. The rest of the work on the whole was very satisfactory. Each of the teachers appear to have endeavoured to thoroughly teach the work.

The average for the week past is 253.1

The Evening School report was received on June 22nd.

25th

Standard I was transferred to the Infant Division today. L. Sargent P.T. 3rd Year has gone to take charge of them until an assistant is obtained. 5 doz slates and books (2 kinds) were also lent.

25th

3rd

The attendance this morning is very poor indeed, only 183 being present.

6th

The attendance during the past week has been very poor indeed. On several meetings of the school 100 children were absent. Average attendance 193. This is 10 lower than the previous week.

Clara Manning and Violet Colson two Standard VII girls have been assisting in the Infant Department owing to the illness of P. Newell Pupil Teacher.

9th

School was closed this afternoon on account of Baptist Treat.

11th

Needlework was taken from 2 to 3 this afternoon instead of from 2 – 230. The Exam knitting is progressing well many of the upper girls have finished. Fanny George’s lessons have been very indifferently done during the last fortnight. The History lesson today I had to repeat after school.

12th

Miss Cowling absent this afternoon. She asked for leave to attend a Sunday School Treat in Wellingborough. A heavy storm has greatly interfered with the attendance this afternoon.

13th

Work has proceeded according to the timetable during the past week with the exception of the sewing on Wednesday & Friday afternoon. This was taken for one hour instead of half an hour.

The discipline in Standard III upper division is not at all satisfactory. Miss Chandler has not been accustomed to the work. Consequently I am obliged to continually over look this class. The P.T. now in the Infant division room is greatly needed to assist with Standard IV as that class is too large for one teacher.

16th

Mr. Knight, Chairman, visited school today. Two Sunday School treats have greatly interfered with the attendance this afternoon. 186 present out of 278 on the books.

Aug 1894

1st

I have allowed Standard II & IV girls who have not completed their exam knitting to continue during the afternoon instead of working lessons with the class. The whole of the knitting for exam is being finished before the holidays.

I have examined the Pupil teachers in all subjects. The History and Geography of all has improved but they do not get sufficient done in the time. The arithmetic of C. Clarke & L. Sargent was not carefully worked and C. Clarke did not apparently understand the Principal in tow of the sums. The remainder of the work arrears satisfactory for the time of the year.

I have completed my examination of the school. The arithmetic of Standard V and the dictation of Standard II & III are the weakest points. The grammar , reading and recitation in all classes are in advance of last year. The discipline in each class was very satisfactory.

3rd

The school closes today for the Summer Holiday and re-opens on September 3rd. The attendance has been very poor throughout the week. The average is 194.
