A valuable stack of hay, the property of Mr. G. White, dairyman, Manton-road, Rushden, was found to be on fire on Saturday afternoon. The Fire Brigade were summoned, the call being received at 3.30 p.m., and Capt. F. Knight, Engineer Green, and Firemen Payne, Jaques, Sparrow, Timpson, and Bridgeford proceeded with all haste to the scene of the fire, "Tibb’s Field", Newton-road. The nearest main was in Trafford-road, and no less than 20 lengths of hose were required to deal with the outbreak, which was speedily under control, although the stack was well alight when the brigade arrived.
After four hours’s strenuous work the brigade succeeded in removing the greater part of the stack, which was the product of about seven acres, and of good quality. All this valuable material, however, which was not insured, sustained damage by smoke and water. The firemen received valuable aid from Special Constables H. Clayton and T Clark.
The cause of the outbreak is not known definitely but it is surmised that it was overheated.
