Fire at Sanders' Lodge

On Wednesday night between ten and eleven o'clock a fire broke out on the extensive farm premises at Sanders' Lodge, about a mile from Rushden, and belonging to Mr. Thos. Sanders, of Rushden Hill. Information was conveyed to Rushden immediately on the discovery of the outbreak, and the Fire Brigade turned out splendidly, being on the spot about a quarter of an hour after the alarm. Arriving at the lodge, they found a large stack of meadow hay consisting of about 40 tons, and valued at about £150, on fire. The Brigade worked hard in removing the burning hay, the only thing that could be done, seeing that the nearest supply of water available was several hundred yards off, and had to be fetched by means of carts. With the limited supply thus obtained the Brigade, assisted by a number of willing helpers, managed to confine the fire to the stack named, the wind also favouring their efforts. Notwithstanding their exertions, however, the firemen were engaged nearly the whole of Thursday on the premises in overturning and playing on the stack, which is situated close by the roadside, and in close proximity to a number of other ricks and thatched farm buildings. As it happened, the stack in question was the last one on the east side of the yard, and the stiff "nor-wester" which was blowing favoured the efforts of the firemen. Had the wind been in another quarter it would have meant the destruction of the whole of the homestead buildings, in which a number of ewes and lambs were lying. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, as at ten o'clock the foreman, who was attending the stock, noticed no sign of fire, Mr. Sanders is insured in the Norwich Union.
