Rushden Echo & Argus, 15th January 1932, transcribed by Kay Collins
Lorry Fire on Bedford Road

Traffic between Rushden and Bedford was held up for an hour on Monday morning while a large lorry from Leicester burned fiercely in the middle of the road near Bletsoe “Falcon”.

The lorry, belonging to Messrs Toone, of Birstall, near Leicester, was laden with stockings, ladies’ shoes and similar goods. The blaze began suddenly as the result of a back-fire, and the driver, after jumping from his seat could only remove two cases before the flames took complete hold.

Called by telephone at 6.30, the Rushden Fire Brigade turned out in five minutes under Capt. R F Knight, taking the motor pump. Water was drawn from the River Ouse, and after putting out the flames the Brigade hauled the burnt-out lorry off the road, thus releasing about 30 vehicles which had been detained. The road was clear by 7.45.
