Rushden Echo, 23rd November 1928, transcribed by Kay Collins

Mrs. Everingham's millinery

Fire At ShopShortly before 5.30 on Sunday evening the Rushden Fire Brigade received a call to a fire in Mrs. Everingham's millinery establishment in High-street. Second Officer Packwood was soon on the scene with the motor-pump, and Chief Officer Knight and the rest of the brigade followed shortly after. The floor of the sitting-room and the joists and ceiling o the shop were found to be alight, but after cutting away the floor the firemen were able to direct a jet of water on to the flames, which were soon extinguished.

The cause of the fire appears to be that the hearth in the sitting-room became overheated, as a result of which the floor became ignited. Mrs. Everingham and her daughter were at tea at the time of the outbreak, and it was a strange roaring sound that led to their discovery of the fire. Although only slight damage was done to the building, the stock was considerably damaged.
