Cottage in High-street south
Mr Robert Beasly
FireOn Wednesday morning an alarm of fire was raised, the outbreak being in a cottage in High-street south, belonging to Mr J Sargent, and occupied by Mr Robert Beasly. The inmates of the house noticed that a large beam over the fireplace was smouldering and immediately raised the alarm. Fireman George Bayes was soon on the spot followed by sub-engineer J T Colson and firemen J T Reid, Goodwin, and Seckington. The hose truck was brought up, but the pipe was not fixed, the outbreak not being serious enough. Besides the beam itself there was a lot of wood in the chimney, and no doubt the fire would have soon assumed a more dangerous aspect but for the readiness of the firemen, who were assisted by Mr H Staniland and Mr Geo. Underwood. The damage was about £10, most of the furniture having been removed as soon as the outbreak was discovered.
