AN ARMED robber dressed as a country gent got away with more than £6,000 in a raid on Rushden's Trustee Savings Bank.

The man, wearing a tweed jacket and trilby, walked into the High Street bank at 3pm yesterday to keep an appointment with manager Mike Steele who he held up at gunpoint.
He then demanded cash while customers and other staff in the bank were unaware of the drama.
A total of £6,125 was loaded into a brown or burgundy-coloured brief case and the raider escaped along Alfred Street and into Church Street.
Road blocks were set up around the town, but the robber escaped the net. Police are now checking throughout the country to find details of any similar raids.
The raider, who was seen to lean against a car in Alfred Street as he checked the contents of the case, is believed to have then met a woman in Church Street with long straggly hair and carrying a blue coat. It is not known in which direction the couple went.
The man is described as around 50, 5 ft 8 ins to 6 ft tall with a sallow complexion and wearing dark-framed glasses.
He was clean shaven and was wearing the tweed coat and trilby, a white shirt and brown tie. He used an assumed American accent.
A spokesman for the TSB in London said the man told the manager to send out a note for cash. He added: "Staff at the bank didn't know what was happening and nor did customers."
Mr Steele declined to talk about the raid, but police, who say the man could have been in the area prior to the raid, have appealed to anyone with information about the robbery to contact them Wellingborough 44033. |
