George Yates, a picture frame maker, came to Rushden from Derbyshire, with his family, to 115 High Street, next to Bugby's fish shop, sometime in the mid 1890s. In October 1896 he submitted plans to the council to open a photographic studio in Station Road. [68ft from Perkins' Factory]
The 1898 Kelly’s directory shows he was at both addresses. In that year he also framed a diploma for York & Pare, plumbers.
The Xmas shops article in the Rushden Echo on 21st December, 1900 tells us “Mr. G. Yates utilizes one window for photographs and pictures, of which he has an excellent show; the other window is used for toys, games, dolls, &c.”
In 1906 he was trading as a furniture dealer at 121 High Street, and by 1908 he had left Rushden, and Harry Cartwright was trading there.
