Collett Fisher Tall

We have recently come across this advert from a copy of an 1893 Rushden Argus so Collett arrived here a little earlier than thought!

Not here for the 1891 census but he arrived soon after.

Collett Fisher Tall, was born in America, to British parents, and a when he came to Rushden he kept general drapery. In 1895, he married Susannah Meadows (of St Ives) at St Ives HUN.

His advert, in the programme for the new Amateur Dramatic Society in 1899, tells he was a "High Class Dress and Mantle Maker."

By 1901 they had two daughters, Edith in 1897 and Marjorie in 1899, and then Winifred was born in 1906.

He traded at 3 & 5 High Street until 1903. The property was called Victoria House. (Later J S Taylor and Lighstrung)

By 1908 he was working as a currier's manager, and had moved to 21 Gordon Terrace, Higham Road. It was a seven roomed house, and he now had seven children, and his grandmother, Mary Ann now aged 80, was also living with the family.

In 1915 he is one of the Special Constables, and was also one of the wardens in 1937.

His daughter, Edith married Thomas Coggins in 1921.

Collett died in 1951, Susannah in 1963, Marjory in 1985, and Winifred in 1990, and all are buried in grave F1516 in Rushden Cemetery:

Nos 3 & 5 High Street are in Church Parade, facing the Church, and were called Victoria House.

Nothing more is known of W Clarabut.
