Poundstretcher

Early arrivals.

There is a saying "as one door closes another one opens."

It seems rather appropriate in August 2023, as Wilko has gone in to administration, with their survival under threat.

Meanwhile up the High Street a new face has appeared, in the shape of Poundstretcher; the shop floor was being filled with stock at the start of the week on Monday 21st, as can be seen in our shots. They opened their doors to customers midweek on Wednesday 23rd August.

The building at 34-36 High Street, was previously used by the Co-Op, and Argos of course. Argos left our High Street in 2021.

Starting off in 1981, Poundstretcher is a discount retailer for quality food, toiletries, garden essentials, and home-ware brands.

The company is based in Kirby Muxloe, Leicstershire, and is bringing thousands of products to its Rushden store. They have been in the county for a while, and have branches at Kettering, Northampton and Corby.

With over 350 stores nationwide they carry a selection of items including cleaning supplies, kitchenware, bedding, bathroom products, furniture, electrical goods, and childrens’ toys.

Our furry friends are going to be catered for too, with a selection of pet care products within their “Pet Hut” section of the store.

There does seem a little irony in the fact that both Wilko and Poundstretcher started out just over the county border in Leicestershire.

A number of Wilko stores have been taken on by rival B&M, who have agreed a £13m deal for up to 51 of Wilko's buildings, but the fate of the brand and a further 300 stores remained uncertain?

On the day of the Poundstretcher launch, trade looked steady, as was to be expected. Opening hours are 9.00-18.00 from Monday to Saturday, and on Sunday from 10.00 until 16.00.

Busy first few hours.

The weather did pick up from lunchtime, with a high of 26C, blue sky and light fluffy cloud.

The situation regarding Wilko is on-going, and in early September, 2023 the Rushden store is still safe.
