More Opposition To Pensions Office Closure?

Rushden NUBSO branch is expected to officially object to the proposed closure of the town’s Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance branch when the executive committee meets shortly.

The president, Mr. R. Bazeley, told the “Echo” this week that the branch regarded the possibility of the office being transferred to Wellingborough as meaning that Rushden would be without another service.

“There will probably be a joint decision by the committee to oppose this move,” he said.

Local operatives needed the High Street branch for business connected with their work, including the arrangement of industrial injury claims and sickness benefits.

“We have a pretty good liaison with the Ministry, and we have always had it,” he said.

The urban councilhas already decided to object. Mr. R. R. Griffiths, the chairman, said it would cause great inconvenience.

He appealed to the townspeople not to take the Ministry decision lying down.

The regional officer has explained that no steps would be taken until his department was satisfied that the same facilities could be provided.

Local manager Mr. J. A. Holliday, has said that if the branch was transferred to Wellingborough, where, it is understood new offices may be built, people in the Rushden District would have the same service.

Rushden, Higham Ferrers and District Chamber of Trade may discuss the matter at its weekly luncheon.
