Margaret's

In 1937 Mr and Mrs Allen had a new double shop built on the ground adjoining the cottages. Mrs Allen sold the shops to Mr and Mrs Smith on the 30th May 1959 and they traded there as W T Smith, greengrocery. In 1969 the shop was turned into one and was refitted with new shelving.

I went to work for Mr & Mrs Smith as a Saturday Girl aged 14, and when I left school I worked there full time.

Mr & Mrs Smith retired and sold the shop to Mr & Mrs Sharp on 11th July 1994. The shop was refitted again and renamed as “Margaret’s” after ME, as everybody used to say when they went into their newsagents shop opposite “now we are going across to see Margaret”. I stayed with Mrs Sharp until I retired on 31st May 2008, after 48 years serving the public with flowers, fruit and produce, having served three generations of some families; mothers, children and grandchildren. How things changed since I started, not all for the good; people were a lot happier then.

Margaret

Mr and Mrs Allen's old shop in Cambridge Cottages in Newton Road

When Margaret first started work for Bill Smith there were two shops. A grocery and sweet shop with a greengrocery and flower shop.

Flowers had always been displayed outside the widows, and then plants were added to the range.

Inside the shop at Christmas time - see all the wreaths Margaret made, displayed above the shelves.

When John & June Sharp
took over the
shop, they
refitted it &
renamed
"Margaret's".
These displays show the large variety of flowers and plants that Margaret sold. Right - spring time and bedding plants are added to the range.

The shop stood empty for a few months, then was taken on again, but closed once more after about 12 months.
It is now a Tattoo parlour called 'Inkfinity' - 2012. By 2016 it had changed hands twice more.
