The Business was founded in 1885 by James Frederick Knight, who was born at Earls Barton in 1859. He married Louisa Maria Groves of Northampton in 1891.
Three years later their son Arthur Stanley was born, followed by two daughters, Dorothy in 1896 and Marjory 1898, and Geoffrey in 1907, all being born in Rushden.
James Knight traded as a watchmaker and jeweller from 22 High Street, from 1890, and as furnishers from 20 High Street from 1898. His son, Arthur joined him in the business and it continued into the 1970s.

Sixty-five years ago the well-known firm of Knight & Son, Jewellers and House Furnishers was founded in Rushden. It is by far the oldest established business in the High Street.
The late Mr J F Knight was its founder and it has enjoyed a continuous family interest and management to this day.
Founded two years before Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, this business has served many generations through three wars and five reigns.
The House of Knight and Son is now almost a tradition in Rushden and district: its friendly atmosphere and personal service is warmly appreciated by those whom it is privileged to serve – both near and far.
To our hundreds of Friends and Clients, to our very loyal staff, both past and present, and to our suppliers who have served us faithfully and well during the most difficult time, we say

A fine china shop called "Blue Windows" was at 132 at the far end of High Street, managed by May Knight, but the business moved to No. 35 High Street about 1958. This was closed in 1967.
