King Edward VII

The King Edward VII stands on the corner of Cromwell Road and Queen Street, opposite the factory of William Green and Son.

It was originally a beer-house and was granted a full licence despite the strong oppostion from the Temperence Society.

In the early 1900s the landlord was John Whitehead, and W G Holyoak held the licence in the 1950s.

Following a two year period of closure the King Edward public house re-opened its doors on Saturday 24th October 2015, at 7.30pm. This was almost two years to the day following the shutting of the doors on Saturday 12th October 2013.

The venue is now to be the live music venue run by Phoenix Star Entertainment, and on a chilly damp evening on the final day of British summer time (BST) there was the added attraction on an open fire to warm the crowd up, as it was 7°C outside.

October 2020

Greg Cunnington and Billy Boddington, two local businessmen, now have the lease on the pub.
Greg tells us: "We are putting a lot of money into the building, including new windows and doors, new internal layout to toilet and kitchen areas, new rebuilt pub garden, and all new electrics and heating throughout. We have taken on this project to stop the building being turned into flats, and to give something back to the community. We will be starting a new food business running from the pub once we get the first phase completed and doors open again".
